Support » Fixing WordPress » Create WordPress MU and link it to current WordPress install

  • Hi! I have a current WordPress install. It works great has the theme we like and the blog system our writers love. But we’d like to add some interactivity with the users so that users can have their own blogs. I am thinking that WordPress MU combined with Buddy Press would be great for that. Is there a way to do a separate WordPress MU install and have a single sign-on system between our WordPress blog and the MU/BuddyPress system?

In the big picture, we’re just trying to create a social network side to our blog to give our readers a place to interact (we already have forums) and write their own blogs.

    Thank you for your help!

No, unless you go the extra mile and make a script to do so. Or, unless you want to wait for the time that the WP and WPMU codebases will be merged. Matt has announced it already, but there’s no definite timeline per Donncha, the lead WPMU developer.

It will be much more efficient and easier to convert your single WP install to a WPMU installation already. The main blog of WPMU will aggregate all the latest posts, categories, tags, etc. while the sub-blogs installed in subdomain or subdirectory structure will be where your individual users will be blogging in. Plus, BuddyPress install will be in essence, a cinch.

Since the main focus is on your users. I suggest exporting XML per author. Each XML will be imported into respective WPMU sub-blogs of each user. There is also a way where you can convert WP database to WPMU DB structure for importing. But that way only imports to the main blog which will then defeat your purpose of a blog per user. Or, since you’ve already established your users in main blog, you just re-export XML of each author from the main blog of WPMU and import to individual sub-blogs, but that’ll be the circuitous way.

Basically, that’s a simple overview of the process. For a second opinion with other WPMU users, go to the WPMU forums at http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/
