Hello,
I currently have version 2.8 installed and for some reason, when I try to automatically upgrade from 2.8 to 2.8.1, I get the following error message:
Installation Failed
Nothing more, nothing less. Does anyone know what's wrong and how I can fix this so that I can upgrade to the new version of Wordpress? The reason why I want to upgrade is because I want to be kept up-to-date with new and/or fixed features and also because I cannot move my widget AT ALL because they seem to have stuck since I have received the yellow "WordPress 2.8.1 is available! Please update now." message.

usually it is a problem on wordpress end - wait 24 hours and try again

I also had a problem with upgrading from 2.8-DE to 2.8.1-DE.
This has worked for me:
Inserting
define('WP_TEMP_DIR', ini_get('upload_tmp_dir'));
in the wp-config.php
After that my upgrade has worked.

No luck still...I've NEVER had a problem auto-upgrading until going to 2.8!
yesmax, I just tried your suggestion and it did not work.
very annoying...

most of the time it's permission issue. try to re-set your site working directory permissions.
