• I know that 90% or more users of this theme will never have a problem with the use of tables for layout (either practical or “theological”), but I would love to see the tables defining the sidebar layout go away in favor of divs. My reason is on the practical side (though theologically I dislike the use of tables for layout as well).

Basically, I don’t want to be limited to only vertical sidebars, but be able to position divs that could make up more complex layouts.

    For example:

header
    | left | inner left |
MAIN
right
inner rt
footer

This would enable me to make a more graphically complex homepage design using this template and not custom code myself out of being able to upgrade in the future.

    Any ideas?

  • I’m not sure what you are talking about. I’ve never seen tables in any themes.

I’ve also been able to code graphically complex sites using existing themes and the sidebar.php being how it is.

The people using Atahualpa are actually very smart, because their site will not fall into thousand pieces in IE6 while providing a fluid layout with min and max width, auto image resizing and wrapping long strings.

Atahualpa is like it is on purpose, not because the developer didn’t know CSS well enough. Version 2 was a “Holy Grail” CSS only layout, in version 3 it evolved beyond that. If you look closely you’ll see that it’s not just “using a table”. It’s a whole new technique. If you can find something better on the internet I’ll happily implement.
