Hi !
From my dashboard when i try to auto upgrade from 2.8 to 2.8.1 i get just after 1-2 seconds this message:

I don't have plugins or any other thinks installed. It's fresh installation.

If you try again and it fails you may have to manually update following the instructions at Upgrading WordPress.
@MichaelH - wow. That was really helpful. Now, does anyone know why it might be failing and how one might go about correcting that problem?
I've abandoned trying to upgrade existing WP blogs and am now simply attempting to install a fresh copy of WP 2.8.1. given its own unique database just to see it happen. I can then compare and contrast my fresh install with my upgrade install and hone in on possible errors in 'upgrading'. My thread provides a lot of detail about how these trials are going. People with similar issues would want to read my thread- UpGr to WP 2.8.1.: PHP is sending my browse loc outside my wordpress folder . It provides detailed language and similarities.
I carefully follow the Codex - Upgrading WordPress and Installing Wordpress.

I had no big problems upgrading from 2.7.1 to 2.8.1
I took the usual advice, backing up db and files, disabling plugins. Also I had upgraded my plugins before upgrading to 2.8.1.
I do a manual update not automatic updates btw.
It failed for me also the first time. Then I made sure all plugins were deactivated (I know that's not your issue) and performed another automatic upgrade, which worked.
