   Howdy. New to WP. I have not been able to find a good book that outlines how to use WP to design a website for our organization. We will have a news and blog section, but we will also have 12 other sections covering various needs. All the books we look at discuss setting up WP as a blog. We want a book that shows the WP as a non-blog CMS.... any one know of such a book? Hoping there is such a book or tutorial...

   Yes, WordPress and WordPress MU can be used as CMS effectively and easily.

   Thanks for the link about WordPress MU. I was not aware of this version of WP. But to be clear ... we don't need Multi-Blogs. We will have 5-7 editors who will want to be able to publish to various sections be it News, Blog, or whatever. We will have only ONE blog, ONE News Section, and another 7-10 sections. Do we need WordPress MU for this purpose?

   @mmulens: No, you don't need WPMU. The suggestion was based on the premise that an editor is assigned to a WPMU sub-blog representing each section and the WPMU blog aggregates the information on front and inside pages. Works well as CMS with larger news magaziness, organizations, companies etc. That way, an editor is responsible for his/her section and users.

   Yes. you can use the regular WordPress as CMS and set up categories and/or custom taxonomies (in WP 2.8) and/or tags to organize each section.

   @LeonTheHitman: Yes, there are plugins which can assist you with e-commerce. Or, you could incorporate Magento, OsCommerce, etc with WordPress in different ways.

   Here are a whole bunch of examples of WordPress being used as a CMS. They should definitely give you an idea of what WordPress can do as a CMS.

   This article on pages in the Codex is probably a good place to start for information on how to use WordPress as a CMS as well.

   Thanks for that Douglas.

   I've not really had time to scan these threads for possible answers to the following question, so I thought I'd just take a chance and ask:

   how can I design my own tailored look for my wordpress sites? which css files do I need yo change? Or which directories do I need to put my css files into? What are the limitations?

   I do realize that you must be busy with your own doings, but if you(or anyone else) could at least please point me in the right direction as to where I could find the answers, that would be highly appreciated.

   style.css in your theme's folder. Your limits are basically your imagination. It is recommended (by me, at least) to find a theme you really like and then edit it to make it unique to your needs.

   Kubrick (default WP theme) is very well designed to be hacked to your hearts content, so if you have a good amount of experience and want to skip the "building blocks" of using another theme, that's the one to edit - your limit is your imagination, you can hide entire elements and change then to appear any way you like :)

   This does take a bit of knowledge, and it seems you have it, but if you are familiar with editing a myspace profile or a blogger template, this is the same bag, with more control and freedom :)

   what justbrian said ... basically a working knowledge of HTML/CSS then a grasp of WordPress template tags to get the dynamic stuff going :-)
   I usually start off creating pages in PSD to HTML, validate it then port HTML design to WordPress.
   Check out WordPress Codex re Blog Design and Layout. Read up on the Anatomy of a WordPress theme to get a better grip of what are required.

    Nice one guys! Especially for the link to "Anatomy of a Wordpress theme"...believe it or not, it answers what was going to be my very next question ;) serious.

    I have a comfortable, working knowledge of xhtml and css as well as a basis in php 6 (not sure if that helps...worpress is made outa php 5, no? anyway, irrelevant).
