I am having same issue, can anyone help???
I have the same issue. Tried changing themes thinking it might be something in (or not) the code that kept it from calling the widgets, but to no avail.
Do either of you have the Position Yourself plugin activated?
I think that might be the problem. I went through and systematically deactivated my plugins and tested to see if one of the plugins was to blame.
I got the widgets to work after I deactivated the Position Yourself plugin.
Confirmed: The Position Yourself was absolutely the culprit for me. If you’ve got that plugin installed, deactivate it and you should be good to go.
If that doesn’t work, or if you don’t have that plugin installed, it might just be another plugin that is the problem.
Just upgraded to 2.8.1 and the widgets will not move one way or the other. I disabled all plugins; no luck. I then did the default theme, and again no luck. Can someone tell me how to manually modify the code to fix this frustrating problem?
Ok, for what ever reason this area started working. I did send email to my host about mod security and removed Events Manager plugin. So somewhere it got fixed.

Try deactivating all plugins, reactivate them one at a time checking to see if widgets now work or as you continue widgets still work. If they stop working, deactivate the faulty plug-in and inform the developer of the problem
