Thanks for all your support, but I decided to go with another theme instead. I ended up with the Upsilon theme from Living OS. I added an event calendar plugin and all is well. It is not as easy to modify but with your help here I felt more confident about doing the edits. I will include the links below:

Simon,
Wanted to give a big shout out and thanks for figuring out how to fix this WP theme.
I had ultimately decided to ditch the theme altogether, but one of my clients really was sold on using this theme for their church website.
I've done my fair share of reverse engineering code and it can be REALLY cumbersome. So I know what it took for you to find a fix. I don't think I can say enough thanks for the diligence you've shown.
