I upgraded to 2.8.1 and encountered a problem in the admin area. The public part of the Web site seems fine after the transition.

In the admin, I do not have the vertical tool bar on the left with all the options to manage posts, media, links, appearance, pages, etc. There is a space for it, but it does it's not visible.

I can create a new post by selecting "new post' in the menu bar at the top. However, I can not use "screen options" or "help" that is also at the top.

I've reinstalled 2.8.1 twice. I even went "down" to 2.8 to see if that mattered. When I installed the new version, I did not replace my wp-content folder. I haven't seen a theme conflict with the admin side, but could that be it? I also can't turn off my plugins one by one to see which ones might create a conflict. I can access the plugin folder via FTP and remove the all if the consensus is that a plugin can conflict with the admin side of WordPress. I've had plugins conflict with the public part of a WordPress site, but not the admin side.

Before I scrap the plugin folder, does anyone have any other ideas as to what the problem might be? A search of the forum didn't yield similar results, so I'm looking for any insight.

    don't scrap the plugin folder
just rename it - this will deactivate the plugins and let you see if that is the problem
rename it back correctly when done and reactivate one by one to find guilty plugin

very doubtful a theme will mess with admin functions

Thank you. That worked. It apparently is a plugin conflict. I'm now on the plugin hunt.

And ... the culprit appears to be the plugin Advanced-Admin-Menus
