• After upgrading to 2.8, WP can’t seem to write to the domain root. I have it set up according to the instructions under “Giving WordPress its own directory.” Everything works fine on a fresh 2.7.1 install (via GoDaddy’s automatic WP install). Then I upgrade to 2.8 from the admin interface, and the Permalinks page gives me the “If your .htaccess were writable…” error, and the GoogleXMLSiteMaps plugin can’t create a sitemap, so it seems WP just can’t write to the root at all after the 2.8 upgrade. Any ideas why this might be?

We’ll work with you to identify the issue. Are you using Windows or Linux hosting?

I’m using Linux hosting. I’ve reproduced the problem on all the domains associated with my hosting account. It only seems to affect WP installs that I set up according to the instructions here. I’ve tried giving WP its own directory both before and after the WP 2.8 upgrade. For the time being, I’ve just moved my entire install to the root, but I’d prefer to keep my domain root less messy by leaving the WP core files in their own directory.

We’ve used the “Giving WordPress its own directory” settings on a test WP site, and we could not recreate your issue.

You stated that you have upgraded to WordPress 2.8 manually, and GoDaddy.com now offers an automatic WordPress 2.8 upgrade for Hosting Connection installations. Therefore, we suggest that you use the automatic upgrade option to replace your current manual upgrade.

To upgrade automatically to 2.8 –

    1. Access your hosting plan’s Hosting Control Center
    2. Click on the “Your Applications” button
    3. Click on the “My Applications” tab
    4. Locate your WordPress installs and select the first one
    5. Click on the “Install This Update” (gold) button

Once the update is completed you’ll receive a confirmation email.
