NextGen Gallery: Galleries don't display after 2.8! (47 posts)

@ac1969: Deactivating the original Lightbox plugin by Lokesh Dakar and instead uploading and activating the Lightbox2-pugin found at stimuli.ca fixed the issue here with thumbnails showing fine after upgrade to 2.8 but lightbox not working.

Now the lightbox is working again.

Just for additional info, I did the upgrade of NextGen Gallery before as well. There was a note in my "Gallerie" menu item saying I needed to update the Gallery first. Before that picture galleries didn't even show up...

    Stimuli Lightbox2-plugin

Still I think is is a major issue and needs fixing. Why does the stimuli.ca-plugin work with 2.8 while internal NextGen lightbox function as well as Lightbox2-plugin don't?

bump to the top as I believe this to be a significant issue with the latest NextGen version and wp2.8

At the moment my website is full of broken links because the singlepic shortcode isn't functioning, thumbnails aren't generated when I upload images, album and gallery column displays aren't functioning (i.e. set columns to zero and there is just a single column of images, changing the value doesn't change anything) Server details uploaded earlier in the thread. Any thoughts Alex ?? I'm prepared to give you unrestricted access to the website if this would help debug the problen for myslef and other users with the same issues

    regards

I think I'm having the same problem as aimeeish was having. After upgrading to WP 2.8 and NGG 1.3.3 my images just link over to the image file and the thickbox effect doesn't work. I tried aimeeish's solution of removing the rel line, but that didn't change anything.

    Here's a link:

    Help?

    Thanks.

Problem solved thanks to this post: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/278542?replies=11.

It was a problem with my them. I was missing <?php wp_footer(); ?> in the footer.php file. Added it back in and it fixed the issue.

    That's not my issue, nweynand. My footer.php file contains a <?php wp_footer(); ?> line.

The error has nothing to do with user settings, it's all caused by security restrictions on file permissions for the wp-content directory and imagerotator.php, work through this list to fix the slideshow not working.

    Alex,

    website link is here

scroll past the first couple of images and you will see the broken shortcodes. Any of the photography links in the right column contain one or more albums and galleries. Server details were posted previously

Direct email is kevin@photosbykev.com if you wish to look closer at the source

    regards
    Kev

visser.labs - that is not the problem that I'm encountering or that most others are describing here. The problem that is described is quite different (404 errors and such), and the permissions are already set as defined (755).

However, I don't know what the problem is. I just went through the trouble of duplicating my WP 2.7 site in its entirety (manually hacking the duplicated database to point to the new URL in a whole bunch of places, etc - took longer than I thought to copy the site to a new URL). For some reason, NextGEN Gallery simply refused to see the images at all, and also refused to let me edit its configuration options. So I reset them, and it began working fine in 2.7. I never could figure out what database entry was stopping it from working.

Then I upgraded to 2.8, to get a non-working site to play with and link to. Wouldn't you know it, the darn thing WORKS! I have no idea why it works when my main site fails, but it does. Perhaps resetting the NextGEN Gallery settings and manually reconfiguring before the update somehow did the trick, but I don't get it. It doesn't make any sense to me, and I'm not sure I want to take the time to upgrade my live site again only to have to restore it again, which is somewhat time consuming.

Right now, it looks like resetting Gallery's settings to the default before upgrading may be the solution. I don't know for sure that it's what solved my problem though, nor do I know if it'll work if you reset the config after upgrading. In either case, it doesn't delete the galleries themselves, and only requires you to reconfigure the settings pages.

That seems to have done it! I reset the NGGallery settings, manually reconfigured it (it's annoying, but seven pages of options, most of which are nearly-default on my site, are better than rebuilding the galleries from scratch), and then updated WordPress. I disabled SuperCache (to be sure I wouldn't be seeing an old cached version), cleared my browser cache (for the same reason), and the galleries are working fine now!

I don't know what the problem was, but this seemed to have done the trick. If you've already updated to 2.8 and didn't revert to 2.7 upon finding this problem, try resetting your Gallery settings anyhow. If doing it pre-update fixed the problem doing it post-update might also fix it.

That makes no sense eharris, I've looked at the code going on when you reset settings to default for NGG, and it does very little. weird!?

if anyone has a broken site and needs help pm me or flick me an e-mail michael@visser.com.au as I'd love to jump in and help.

visser - I agree, it makes absolutely no sense, and I don't understand at all why it worked, or why I wasn't able to duplicate the problem on a test site that was literally a direct copy of the files and database from the site that broke every time I upgraded it.

    Hi Alex.
To let you know - I fixed my problem. Simple spacing between singlepics helped. Took me helluva time to correct all troubled posts manually, but looks OK now.

Just a suggestion. Since I'm apparently not alone using multiple singlepics in one post, maybe it makes sense to make it possible to post them via one shortcode, something like 'singlepic id=1,2,3,4'?

I tried re-installing the plugin and I tried the permalinks change some here have suggested without any success. Performing a reset to default in the NGG setup kind of worked for me, basically it changed the effect to Shutter which after some playing around is apparently the only effect that works for me. Thickbox, lightbox, etc all don't work properly but shutter works just fine. I'm ok with that until a fix is released.

I eventually sorted my galleries and shortcode problem by:

    1. Deactivating NextGen
    2. Removing the NextGen plugin from the plugin folder
    3. Downloading a fresh copy of v1.3.3 and installing it to the normal folder
    4. Reactivating NextGen
    5. Updating the permalinks to another structure and then changing back to the structure I wanted and updating them again.

Everything works :) No idea what the problem was and I know others have tried this without success but it has worked for me.
