  • Insure backups are completed before doing the upgrade
    1. See WordPress Backups

    Can’t login to deactivate all plugins
    1. Read How to deactivate all plugins when not able to access the administrative menus?

    Try these things to resolve problems with Visual Editor and editor tool bar
    1. Delete or refresh the browser cache

    2. If using Gears, disable it and re-enable it again

    3. Delete wp-admin and wp-includes directories and upload fresh copies from a new(important) install package or reinstall automatically

    4. Visit http://yoursite.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/wp-tinymce.php and look for any PHP errors or warnings at the top. If there are any try contacting your hosting provider to resolve them or try the next step. Of course replace yoursite.com with your domain

    5. A number of plugins have been reported to present problems so deactivate all plugins and reactivate one-by-one to find culprit. Any plugin that uses its own javascripts might be a possible candidate.

    6. Add define( ‘CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS’, false ); near the top of wp-config.php. That would make WordPress admin run slower, so can try removing it in a few days and testing again (this would eliminate any stale network cache)

    7. Some people also reported success redoing the upgrade via Tools->Upgrade->Re-install automatically, then clearing the browser cache.

    8. Try another browser

    9. Confirm that Your Profile, “Disable the visual editor when writing”, is NOT checked.

    Try these things to resolve problems with Widgets such as not able to drag and drop
    1. A number of plugins have been reported to present problems so deactivate all plugins and reactivate one-by-one to find culprit

    2. In Appearance->Widgets under Screen options, try the Enable Accessibility Mode

    3. Delete or refresh the browser cache

    Fatal error: Allowed memory size of xxxxxxxx bytes exhausted
    If deactivating plugins doesn’t work try one of these methods for increasing the amount of memory a PHP script may consume

    1. If you have access to your PHP.ini file, change the line in PHP.ini
    If your line shows 32M try 64M:
    memory_limit = 64M ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (64MB)

    2. If you don’t have access to PHP.ini try adding this to an .htaccess file:
    php_value memory_limit 64M

    3. Try adding this line to your wp-config.php file:
    Increasing memory allocated to PHP
    define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '64M');

    4. Talk to your host.

    Upgraded, can’t login and getting error message
    In a few cases, the error message reports what plugin file is causing the problem so rename or delete the plugin folder, then try login again.

    A post is repeatedly displayed on the blog’s main page
    Likely a problem caused by a plugin so deactivate all plugins and reactivate one-by-one to determine the culprit.

    Getting Warning: gzinflate() [function.gzinflate]: data error when doing the upgrade
    1. Try redoing the upgrade via Tools->Upgrade->Re-install automatically
    2. If that fails, disable all plugins and perform a manual upgrade (see Upgrading WordPress.

    Upgrade causing error 500s
    1. Deactivate all plugins and redo upgrade.
    2. If necessary, perform a manual upgrade (see Upgrading WordPress.

    Blank admin pages after login
    1. Deactivate all plugins. See How to deactivate all plugins when not able to access the administrative menus?
    2. If necessary, rename theme folder in wp-content/themes to cause WordPress Default theme to be place into service

    Blank site after upgrade
    1. Deactivate all plugins. See How to deactivate all plugins when not able to access the administrative menus?
    2. If necessary, rename your theme folder in wp-content/themes to cause WordPress Default theme to be place into service, then see if there’s an upgrade for your theme

    Getting Fatal error: Cannot use object of type WP_Error as array
    1. Problem has been reported with the Options and Structure theme so look for upgrades
    2. Change to the WordPress Default theme if necessary

    Just followed all your instructions. My problem is the plugins, and I have found more than 1 “culprit.” They are about 3 or 4 necessary plugins such as All In One SEO, and XML Sitemap.

    Does this mean that I will need to wait until the plugins are updated?

    Does this mean that I will need to wait until the plugins are updated?

    In short – yup. Sorry. On the bright side, some plugin authors are already releasing updates or working towards a release.

    Kudos MichaelH. I remember way back 2.2 or 2.3 where there was a plugin – Upgrade Pre-flight Check – which checked readiness of theme and plugins currently used for issues that may cause problems during upgrading to latest WP version and issued warnings … something like that should be included in WP upgrade script. Therefore, user has informed options – to continue with upgrade or hold off upgrade.

    I had real problems with this but it seems about 90% back to where it was after I deactivated all the plugins and activated them one by one. It doesnt seem to like the advanced tiny mce editor. I dont like the new widget arrangements.

    I have tried every single thing on the list to fix the Visual Editor and none of it has worked. what else can I try?

    I do steps:

    1. Remove the site from Gears list.
    2. Disable the Gears.
    3. Clear browser cache.
    4. Reinstall WP 2.8 or reupload (overwrite) wp-admin and wp-includes folder.
    5. Clear browser cache (if you choose reinstall way).
    6. Enabling Gears.
    7. Login to wp-admin and re-enabled Turbo-Gears.
    8. Enjoy.

    ^_^

    For those using the Options and Structure themes, I see some folks obviously missed two major theme updates in the last year. 😉

    Both themes have a line that looks like this (it should be near the line with the reported on-screen error):

    $all_cats = get_all_category_ids();

    Changing it to this should fix it (I haven’t really tested this, so someone let me know if the fix works):

    $all_cats = get_categories();

    If you need further help with this, you know how to find my support forums.

    Thank you for this post! This really helped me a lot.

    Sorry but what’s hyperdb?

    I’m having problems with the Ajax. What’s the fix to it?

    I couldn’t save draft, or edit new posts, but editing older posts worked fine.

    After reading mossackanme’s suggestion above, I re-did the upgrade in Safari (where I don’t have Gears installed). Now I can post, but I can’t edit anything.

    The error I’m getting currently is:
    Object of class stdClass could not be converted to string in …./wp-includes/classes.php on line 273

    When I put in some logging statements I see that it always happens when $wpvar is ‘taxonomy’.

    Have you manually reinstalled everything in wp-includes folder?

    Isn’t it kind of stupid to release 2.8 without serious testing with at least some of the major plug-ins like All In One SEO, and XML Sitemap? Isn’t that what ‘beta’ is about? Just asking.

    Like everyone else, I’m slogging though the possible options to get back to normal.

    I agree with milehighfan. I cannot use tags suddenly and get some blank screen and database error message when I even make small editng in a post. it will not accept my tags.

    Why should we have to deactivate all of our plugins and then reactivate them one by one. And when the next versions comes out we will have to do it again. This seems like the most basic of issues. So now if I go back and change a comma to a period in a post I have to delete all the tags or get a database error???

    I get a blank screen and a message like this this when I update a post:

    WordPress database error: [Duplicate entry ‘eihi-shiina’ for key 2]
    INSERT INTO wp_terms (name,slug,term_group) VALUES (‘Eihi Shiina’,’eihi-shiina’,’0′)

    WordPress database error: [Duplicate entry ‘eihi-shiina’ for key 2]
    INSERT INTO wp_terms (name,slug,term_group) VALUES (‘Eihi Shiina’,’eihi-shiina’,’0′)

    Any idea what all this means?

    Thanks

    Bill

    @milehighfan

    The beta is partially so that plugin authors and users can test plugins/themes with the new version of WP, not the other way around. It’s not the WP.org team’s responsibility to ensure that anyone’s plugin works. It’s the plugin author’s responsibility.
