   Hey guys. I'm getting extremely frustrated, so help on this would be greatly appreciated.

   I'm currently trying to install Worpress 2.7 on the somewhat infamous 000webhost site (I use paid hosting at Hosting24, but this is for my portfolio site and I frankly don't want to pay more money than I have to). Now, I've hand installed Wordpress countless times and multiple times on this service (but not on this specific account). I'm trying to install my blog at http://charliegavin.net/artblog/ . As you can see, it simple leads to the "index of /artblog". Individual admin panel files work when I click on them, and I can reach posts thru their individual URLs but the main url for the blog still leads to a directory. I've reinstalled Wordpress multiple times today and I still get the same problem. I do know, however, that all the MySQl stuff is going through (and my chmod permissions for all my files are 777 - not sure if that makes a difference, but, I'll include that anyway).

   Can anybody please help me out? Thanks a ton.

   whats in your index.php? what do your server logs say?

   http://charliegavin.net/artblog/feed/

   its installed.

   for starters,

   files should NOT be chmod 777

   files should be chmod 644

   directories should be chmod 755

   fix that immediately (before you forget) --its a security risk leaving them as you have them.

   also, create an .htaccess file, and put this in it:

   DirectoryIndex index.php

   I usually set things to 777 when I set them up and then change the CHMOD later. Maybe that's bad, i guess.

   I'll try editing the .htaccess - thanks for the suggestion.

   why? Its completely unnecessary.

   By default, nix servers assign permissions to uploads. Literally every shared host has this set up so that files are 644 and dirs are 755. thats done to simplify things for you, and to, more importantly, to secure things for them.

   Weird old habit that started when I misunderstood something in Wordpress.

   Are you suggesting I put and .htaccess in my /artblog subdomain? Because I need http://charliegavin.net to point to something else.

   yeah, where your wp-config.php is

   and im still waiting to know whats in your index.php that's sitting in the same directory. Its redirecting, so Im wondering if its empty or something.

   and what about the server logs? :)

   And about server logs... I'm not sure what they are. I'm sure that just made me look like an idiot.

   yah thats what is sposed to be in that file.

   server logs -- ask the host. that you dont know where they are just means you have to ask :) they may not even make theme available.

   though it appears they offer cpanel, in which case your error log and access log can bother be accessed from there.

   I found an activity log. Would that be like the same thing?

    thats your access log. youre looking for an error log.

    Also, I tried to insert that snipped in the .htaccess in that subdomain, but it told me:

    Could not change perms on /public_html/artblog/.htaccess: Operation not permitted in /home/manager/public_html/includes/filesystem.inc.php on line 723

    I had installed it in two subdomains (wasn't working in either). In the other subdomain, there was no .htaccess file. I made one with the snippet you provided.
