WYSIWYG editor stipping out <P> <BR> (11 posts)

When im creating content with the default wysiwyg editor, it looks fine in the editor. but when i publish/preview the page, the formatting is all messed up cause the <P>
    tags disappear.

is there anyway to keep the editor from stipping these out?

I doubt it is stripping out the <p> tags. It's far more likely that something within your theme's CSS is removing the standard spacing before/after each paragraph. A link to your site would help to confirm this and, possibly, provide a solution.

    its def not my theme.

the tags disappear in the editor. if i switch from html/visual view in the editor, the <P>
    tags disappear.

if i save the post and come back. the tags disappear.

Don't switch back and forth between the HTML and Visual tabs. That will cause problems.

Sadly - known problem, in 2.7.1 this is still the case - but not for everyone. And it does not appear to be theme related. I pray this gets resolved one day. Esmi is correct - it seems (oddly enough) to get "triggered" by switching between Visual and HTML - as soon as I do that - BAM! Reproducable.

(And yes I have scoured these fine forums and tried all the tricks and FCKEditor and so on...)

    Maybe Beta 2.8 will address?

thx for the info guys. but i cant tell my users to not switch between views. that defeats the whole purpose of using this editor.

i just installed the tinyMCE advanced editor plugin and that has a setting you can set to keep <P> tags but now that plugin is causing more problems.

    hope 2.8 will address this.

It may be a bit premature to break out the champagne...but...I have d/loaded and installed the 2.8 Beta and it SEEMS to not break when switching between the HTML and the Visual editors.

The whole point I love WP is it's ease of use and the main reason to want to use HTML is I want to mix some HTML is so I can plonk in the odd table or whatever.

I could prob ignore tables and survive - but my problems always began when I stuck in a <hr> via HTML.

As for the various FCK and TinyMCE editors - yeah they work but that introduces more complexity and they are not 100% bug free (FCK and Chrome/Opera don't seem to play nicely together).

I am not keen on changing any of the PHP files that make up WP lest an update to WP leaves me out in the cold.

External editors like Qumana and ScribeFire are OK and SOMETIMES don't trigger the stray CR / BR problem but again not guaranteed.

So - here's hoping that 2.8 will cure this issue fully...

    Fingers crossed.

    Spoke too soon.

Nope. Still broken! Not cool. Not having a crack at the excellent WP dev team but this seems such an important thing.

As soon as you switch to HTML - it MAY break and re-introduce the stray BR/CR.

I have also formatted all my text in a HTML editor (FrontPage) and then copied/pasted into the HTML tab of WP and NOT touched the visual editor but...

    Darn!

    :(

OK - tried again (new install of 2.8 Beta) - no plugins - standard default theme. Using Mac OSX 10.5.x and XP Pro SP3. Chrome, Safari, IE and FF. Using Apache and PHP on my local PC - acting as the Server.

Standard posting is 100% fine. Adding images and so on - also fine.

As soon as I switch into HTML mode and edit ANY tag or text and THEN update the post then the carriage returns or breaks get stripped.

I tried turning off the Visual Editor but even entering bog standard HTML tags does not undo this problem.

At first I thought it was a browser issue but I doubt it at this stage.

    Interesting.

I am not bitching but just curious as it does not initially appear to be "user" error and it seems quite repeatable.

My friend uses WP 2.7 on his site and he has never had a problem BUT he only EVER uses the Visual editor and NEVER goes into the HTML at all.

Went to http://www.opensourcecms.com and tried the WP 2.7 demo site that they host. Using Chrome 2.x or Safari 4 Beta.

    CR's still being stripped.

So that eliminates a config error on my part (I hope).

There is a plug in called TinyMCE Advanced that fixes this problem most of the time. It has worked for me with all but 1 theme.
