• I changed to WordPress 2.7.1 and now my dashboard is barely usable, no more plug-ins lists and the drop down menus are gone. I tried to change themes but this is not working either as I cannot access the themes template to change header picture for example. I would like to go back to the older WP version, how could I do that?

Are you getting any PHP errors in your error_log? Fixing the problem might be less traumatic than downgrading.

You can try restoring the backup you made of your files and database before you upgraded.

And if you didn’t backup then which version did you upgrade from?

If 2.6.5 then backup your database and files now

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Backing_Up_Your_Database
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup

DON’T TRY THE NEXT PART UNLESS YOU KNOW YOU CAN DO A FULL RESTORE AFTER LOSING EVERYTHING. Sorry for yelling but if you are not careful you will lose your blog.

Once you have your backups preserved and are comfortable with the idea of putting it back (restoring) it, then try extracting the 2.6.5 WordPress files on top of your 2.7.1 installation and see if you get back your blog.

If that does not work, perform the restore and you’ll be at where you are now.

    Good luck.

i had the same problem today, i upgraded from wordpress 2.6.5 to wordpress 2.7.1
and i was surprised to see my admin panel gone and i cannot see the theme editor. it was useless.
for 6 hours, i searched for answers how to restore and how to downgrade, and by trial and error, finally i got my old wordpress 2.6.5 . Yehey!!! now, i have a lesson not to upgrade right away when told to do so.
    this is what i did,

    1. download your preferred old wordpress from here.
download, unzip and extract it. remember where you save the extracted file.
2.open filezilla, go to public_html, delete the wp-admin (of wordpress 2.7.1)
3.in filezilla local site, look for the wordpress file that you downloaded in step 1, right-click wp-admin, and upload.
    4. close all tabs and open your own http://yourwebsite.com/wp-admin
(replace yourwebsite.com with your own website name)

and voila!!! if it worked for me, i hope it will also work for you…
