   If you write a page, and the .htaccess file isn't writable, WP doesn’t tell you that you actually need to edit the .htaccess file and manually enter a new series of RewriteRules for that page. For example: if you create a page with post-slug as “test�, the .htaccess file will be edited and the following RewriteRules added near the top.

   Maybe in the future, it would be nice if it said "We detected that you're using permalinks and your .htaccess file isn't writable, so this is what you need to put in there"...

   As a newbie here, this aspect of getting set-up (permalinks, rss, navigation links in reference to .htaccess) is clearly the most confusing. I have at least several questions that I've asked since starting this process, and everyone was very helpful, but I'm still having trouble. It's been more conusing to me than it probably should.

   Frankly, it clearly says in the documentation that 1.5 is different than 1.2 because it writes the .htaccess for you. But, when it doesn't, it's hard to know what to do next. There's still a lot of 1.2 answers on the forum, so it's hard to know whether of not it's relevant to 1.5. I'm still not sure whether or not I'm supposed to ask my host if I have access to writing on .htaccess.

   So far, the best advice I've gotten is ftping a blank .htaccess to my site if I have a problem to "reboot" things, if I can call it that.

   Just my 2 cents, because everything else was fairly easy to set up for someone who doesn't know much about php, etc.
