   I'm a bit of a newbie with Wordpress but managed to install and post text and photos using my laptop which runs Windows Vista and IE7.
   All is OK.

   However, when my partner went to post a new entry or edit an existing one, the media Upload/Insert icons were missing. Her laptop runs Windows XP with IE7.
   I tried a third laptop which runs Linux and Mozilla and the media icons (buttons) are missing.

   I've searched the forum and tried several of the posted solutions.
   No plugins were enabled. I've tried several different themes, checked the Java and Wordpress were up to date.

   In summary I have only one laptop out of three which sees the media insert buttons.

   And the answer appears to be GEARS.
   In the browser under Tools I found Gears Settings.
   When I disabled the site everything returned to normal.
