    Hi!!

i have some questions about wordpress and was wondering if someone could help me so i can make an informed decision about wether or not wordpress would be the ideal solution for a website i have to build for a client.

I am a web designer but i have no experience in WP or any such software and my client wants a magazine type site that has some specific features such as :

    1) home page with log in and intros of main articles that if clicked take you to registration process with email confirmation and capcha code: to be able to have access to all articles and content.
    2) Registered users may leave comments on articles
    3) Archive of older articles.
    4) Upload form for people to upload content and images to site (content will come as an email to i the designer or someone who will install the new content on the site on a regular basis)
5)some kind of a rating system on articles where registered users can rate articles

Since i have no knowledge of WP, i would like to know:

    1) if WP is a good solution for my site
    2) if i would be able to create a site like this having web design (html css experience) or would need a programmer to aid me
    3) if i would use a template or not? or if i would design the site myself (client wants a specific look for the site) (also, does the above complicate my situation more?

thanks so much for all your help :)

    Your Questions:
    1. Yes, WordPress is a great solution for your site :)

    2. In my experience with customizing WordPress, I have to admit that I would be absolutely lost without knowledge of php and mysql... I've been using WordPress since version 1.5 and it took me quite sometime to wrap my brain around it... I would suggest that you find a very knowledgeable WordPress developer/consultant in your local area to aid you in development.

    3. I would use a theme which I would modify to suite the visual needs of the project. Please be aware that WordPress themes are much more than just templates. Themes supply all of the logic which determines which content to display on the front-end of the site. Modifying a theme can be a pain in the #@!@# though... especially when authors use the css global reset thingy (*{margin:0;padding:0;}) and then have to write millions of lines of code to add margin and padding back to everything.... hmmm, I'm ranting now... sorry about that.

    Best of Luck,
    -Mike

so youre saying, if i use a theme, i wont need the aid of the programmer?
wouldnt it be hard finding a theme with that exact funcionality?

Nope, I did not mean to imply that at all. When I said

I would be absolutely lost without knowledge of php and mysql

I completely meant it. What I meant to communicate in #3 - is that it may be possible to find a theme that does the job well enough needing only minor adjustment from an expert developer... it may also be pretty hard... it all depends on the how "custom" you need to get with things. It may also be pretty easy... really, it all depends.

If I werre to offer you advice, it would be to set up a WordPress "Sandbox" and get a feel for it and see what you can or can't do with it before you offer it as a professional service.

    Best of luck,
    -Mike
