Hi, I'm very new to this and struggling with this install. I can see the theme that I added but when I try to access the admin panel I get a 404 error. Can someone please help?
I'm using 2.71 downloaded to my domain using Fantastico
Host is Host Papa and I'm using Vista
Which admin panel? The entire Admin section or just the Appearance/Themes sub-page?

when I put my domain.ca/wp_admin it gives me the 404 error. I believe it would go to the admin login page normally. I'm not sure what happened.
Where did you install WordPress? In the root of the domain or in a sub-directory?

Check that wp-login.php exists in the root folder.

Ok, so wp is in the public_html directory and it does show the wp_login.php. I uploaded that file again just to make sure. Everything was working at one point in time, but I'm not sure what I changed. Since I don't really have anything created yet, would it be easier to uninstall and start over?
Try just re-uploading the entire wp-includes and wp-admin folders. Plus all of the files on the root WordPress folder.

Sorry, Just for clarification...should all the files be in the public_html or just certain ones.

I tried re-uploading but its still the same. I have a feeling its going to be something really small and silly but I don't understand Wordpress enough to figure it out. I guess I have some homework to do....

Try contacting tech support at Host Papa. I had the same problem installing wordpress at hostexcellence, and after a few tech support emails back and forth, they informed me that I had to go into the web options for my hosting service, enable "Directory Indexes," and input index.php into the text field. (They also had me rename my index.html file (which was there before I installed wordpress index.html_default.)
Hope this helps!
@mattyoungmark: That would certainly create problems. If they offer PHP hosting, why on earth isn't this all set up as default?

It's not a service I got specifically for wordpress -- I've got a few html sites hosted there, and since it's already paid for I figured I'd throw my new wordpress stuff up there too. I just created a subdomain on an existing site for testing, so apparently had to do some massaging.

Oddly, I was using tech support and their suggestions were not working. Then I finally got it installed and this problem happened. I talked to a tech person and they told me that they only provide the software for download and don't help with the program. They suggested I come here and sort out the issue. Would it be easy to just re-install?

A clean reintall couldn't hurt.
You might check to see if your server on Host Papa is running a new enough version of PHP for wordpress. Even after I got mine installed and working I had all sorts of bugs, and finally gave up and tried installing it on my girlfriend's web hosting service (Dreamhost). They have one-button install already set up for wordpress, and on their servers it works much better.
The point is, their system may not be set up to do what you need it to do.
