I'm trying to see if there's interest in me posting a hack that put together that incorporates image uploading in gallery with the wordpress image upload function.
There are only two mods that must be done on the wordpress files themselves, and they are very small. The catch currently is that the hack requires a perl application to function properly, so you must have perl installed on the host system. I'm working on a purely PHP version of this, and have it all but finished except for the API in gallery remote. Let me know.

sure thing, i'd like to take a look at it? is the perl application the core of the mod, or is it something like imagemagick? thanks!

Hmm. PHP good. Perl bad. But, it's your hard work, so it's up, Chuck, to you.

What's up, Chuck? I don't know what you mean about the joke?? ;)
Looking forward to seeing the results! Thanks for your hard work and willingness to contribute to the community.

Sounds great. I have a question though: would this be integrating gallery into WP, or just the uploading of pictures?

This wouldn't so much integrate gallery into WP, rather it would allow you to upload images from the WP interface to a specified table in your pre-existing gallery albums. This way, you wouldn't need to resize your images by hand if you wanted a thumbnail image on the WP index page. The only catch is the thumbnail resize would be specified by the album in gallery ahead of time, not on upload.
Update on this mod: I'm still waiting for some feedback from the guys over at Gallery as to the errors in the funcionality of the upload utility. Should have this done in the next few days ... I'm excited =D

I've made a large post about this at the gallery forums in hopes that someone is familiar with the problem I'm having. If any of you are interested in what I'm trying to do or are very good with passing session variables along in POST headers, feel free to read over it:

How would I implement this into 1.2beta?

Intepide: I've not yet tried this out with 1.2 beta simply because I've not yet made the transition over to it. As I understand it, they've reworked the structure of the admin section and as a result, the way the hack is currently implemented probably doesn't hold. In the next few days, I'll try to take some time to get an install of 1.2 running and see if I can't post the appropriate differences between the two installs.
However, if you're at all eager to figure it out, I encourage you to do so. I would imagine the changes in design of the admin section are mostly cosmetic rather than functional ... so I suggest looking through similar files for the modifications I mentioned; who knows, you might be able to reason it out! :)

chuckg, could you add a link to that tutorial from somewhere on the wordpress wiki, http://wiki.wordpress.org ?

2fargon, it would be my pleasure to add WP-Gallery to the wiki. I was hesitant to add the hack to the wiki until there was a real interest, it seemed a disservice to add a hack no one seemed to want/need.

lomara: You're not the first to ask for this, I just haven't had the time to get 1.2 up and running to see what it will take to make the necessary adjustments. I do plan on doing it, however, so "bare" (or is it bear?) with me until then.

Thanks for all of your efforts, chuckg. In the meantime, I cobbled together the wp-gallery.php hack into WP 1.2 beta so that the "wp-upload" page appears in the menu. It's very sloppy, but the wp upload function works. I'm a total novice with PHP, so I dont' think I want to publish this the way it is in case it doesn't work for other folks.
btw, it's "bear" as in "grin and bear it". Not "bare" as in "bare-assed-naked"!

Is there any progress on the development, as I would love to see this happen also. In addition, I cannot get to http://www.blindmuse.com/, is the site down?
    Thanks for any help.

Ditto. What's the status on this?

You could try Exhibit or Pictorials II which, imo, provide much better functions if you are looking to get photos on your site.

I'd do that - except I have like 500 pictures in a Gallery already that I would hate to redo :(
A gallery implementation for WP would just be beyond awesome!

Wait a minute! I don't want to get into a debate here, but how can you actually compare Exhibit or Pictorialis II to Gallery? Personally, I have spent an ungodly amount of hours searching for the best image gallery package there is. Even after installing Gallery, I kept on searching. However, nothing can compare with its offerings. Bharat's Gallery began over four years ago and has been in active development ever since, now with over 20 people on the development team. I have seen, along the way, how other image gallery packages try to emulate what Gallery is doing. For instance, the latest gallery version has a fullscreen java slideshow that displays images free of any textual obstructions. Do any other image gallery programs have that? No. But, I can guarantee you that they will in the future. I don't know how pretty and neat the coding is (I've heard that it isn't) with Gallery, but I love its functionality. I agree with the previous posts in this thread, that a Gallery implementation for WP would be terrific. The problem with using Exhibit or Pictorialis II is that by the time one of them has half of the features that Gallery does, Gallery will have moved on to something twice as great. Can you tell I'm a Gallery fan? Believe me, I've looked around for something better and continue to do so, my little time-wasting hobby. That's just my humble, but backed by over 200,000 Gallery-using websites around the world, opinion.

My only reference to using a setup like WP vs Gallery is that you would then have the ability to cross-reference photo catagories, easier layout customization, options for different display output, rss feeds for comments, a true admin system, MySQL database reliability, and none of the bloat of multiple files of one photo that Gallery creates.
Gallery is a nice app, but when you try to really work with it and the code it becomes a nightmare. It may have some plush extras like the java slideshow, but doesn't change the fact that isn't really what I want to accomplish with a gallery system. Why make a slideshow in java anyhow... just more bloat. Now, compare a system like WP that allows me to really add some functionality to organization, like grouping muliple photos in different albums to a specific catagory then the ability to view all those photos (from different albums), or write more information about photos (groupings and individual) since the photos become more integral to the publishing platform thus user viewing is more pleasant.
It really comes down to personal taste, but I, like you, constantly look for a better photo system. Makes you wonder if Gallery is that great; why do we keep looking.

    ravan:
Understandable. Just trying to lend a hand. A simple option from moving to WP from Gallery (or working them together) would be to install Exhibit, point Exhibits photo directory to Galleries Albums directory. Then in Exhibit, you are able to create directories and/or pull photos from the already created directories of Gallery. Actually, creating the directories in Exhibit might not work due to the filing system Gallery creates, but you could upload photos like normal with Gallery but still able to view and post photos from those albums through Exhibit.
I've just helped a friend move his horribly cluttered PostNuke site to a WordPress setup, and he was also using Gallery. I deleted Gallery, but kept the albums folder. I just went in and deleted all the extra files that Gallery created and pointed Exhibit to the albums folder. You'll see Album1, Album2, etc which you can leave intact if you still want to use Gallery or rename them to more meaningful titles to only use within Exhibit. If you go with only Exhibit, might be useful to telnet in and remove the sized, thumbs, and highlight files (ie /%rm *.sized.jpb, /% rm *.thumb.jpg, etc).

chuckg, if you still read these threads, I've updated this plugin for use with WP 1.5 and would like permission to release it. Check your email! :)

Updated WP-Gallery 1.0 (Now called WP-GalleryUpload) by ChuckG at Blindmuse.com has been updated to work on Wordpress 1.5 by me.

This plugin integrates image uploading from your Gallery(http://gallery.sourceforge.net) installation directly into WordPress 1.5.

    Get the plugin here

It is working fine on my WP 1.5 install. Just unpack the zip file and follow the instructions in the ReadMe.txt file. I wrote the instructions from scratch, so feel free to correct anything I left out!

Probably the login and password for the program Gallery itself, looking at how the variables were named. You'll never know.
