• Ok so since I haven’t gotten any help with my original problem (http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=25517) I guess I’m going to have to start all over again with a new WP installation. I’m really not good at this, and my original WP installation was done with Fantastico (this one will be too…) however, I need help in how to transfer the database from Broken Blog to this new one. I don’t know anything about MySQL or anything like that, so if anyone can help me – like give me step by step instructions – I WOULD LOVE YOU FOREVER!

  • I would recommend not using fantastico, then you could just upload the files again, and run upgrade, and use your existing database with no problem.

ok thanks. So how would I go about using the existing database?

    omit. double post

    Do you have phpmyadmin ?

If so, take a look at the bottom half of this page:
    http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/backup/

    Restore your database

is there any chance that whatever screwed up on my first blog could then transfer over to this second one?

    Hmm………

Are you moving to a new domain ? Server ?

With the problem you had, I would have first checked the files by deleting all the wp files, uploading new then even requesting a new password and seeing if logging in and posting was okay there.
Right now I don’t see that moving everythign is yet the answer as there are still options to explore.

What ftp client do you have and what WP version are you running ?

I’m not moving to a new server or anything. I’m running 1.2.2 I believe and I’ve previously been using an ftp client that was built into a web editor tsw or something like that, but since switching to Linux I’ll be using a different one now. I haven’t made any final decisions on what I was going to do about it, I was just getting no help before and am not familiar enough with this stuff to know how to troubleshoot properly.

So you’re suggesting that I delete all my wp files and reinstall them manually (as opposed to fantastico) and try again?

Looking again at your problem in the thread you indicate at the top:
It was all working, then it stopped.
Which means that something, somewhere changed.
The highest chance of that happening is something inside your machine – firewall / security program / windows update / something you loaded that affects the browser.
That is where I would start.

The other issue is the blank pages.
This could be related to the above.

If this were my install, I’d start easy and delete all my wordpress files, then reupload – using a proper ftp client – and then seeing what gives. The files you need to worry about the most are those in /wp-admin and /wp-includes – if it’s an admin issue you can probably leave the rest for now.

You can download a version of 1.2.2 from here:
    http://static.wordpress.org/archive/

Btw – upgrading to 1.5 may not help right now

ok thanks so much! At the time that it happened I was having massive computer problems: I thought I was being hacked, I had some viruses, etc etc, so I thought that that might have affected my stuf (although i really have no idea if that’s even possible).

Anyways, I’ll try that. Thanks so much!!!!

    (@jesslin)

ok i did like you said – I deleted /wp-admin and /wp-includes and reuploaded the 1.2.2 version folders and still blank pages.

    bump

Why not set set up a local version of WordPress on your PC and learn what’s going on with that? There are some instructions here http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/xampp/ (thanks to Podz). Xampp is for Windows or Linux. Start with a clean copy of 1.2.2 and an empty database. If that behaves OK, then drop that database and restore a copy of the live database from your host for local testing. That way, you leave the live database safely alone until you know what the problem is.

alright, I’ll try that. Thanks a lot!
