Alternative page names in meta data as nav links

Greetings all,

I’d like to use wp_list_pages() to get the page names and use them as nav links on the home page. However, on the secondary site pages I’d like to pull the page names from a meta data field (for each page). That way I can have more descriptive nav link names on the secondary pages.

Can someone please suggest a good way to do this? I would need to iterate through all the pages and grab the meta data field for each page. Would this be done best with query_posts() or WP_Query()?

I’d like to do this w/o using a plug-in if possible.
