    Hello.

I am having trouble setting up 'pretty' permalinks.

my website is www.baddiec.co.uk and i want my posts and pages to be named links. I have tried to follow the guides but i just kep breaking all the links and having to go back to square 1. The main problem i have is getting my themes catorgry links to work

Can someone give me some advice on this (or possibly talk me through it on msm/skype/phone

Its realy giving me a headache and my computer abilties are zero. I've got by ok up until now but this has my stumped.

    Thanks
    Ben.

You just set the permalinks to the structure of your choice and save. If you have broken links wait an hour. Some hosts (godaddy for one) take a bit to update the .htaccess.

PS: The site you linked doesn't exist.

    Sorry, its www.baddice.co.uk

    typo.

I din't know i had to wait for things to update. I'll try that. I'm on godaddy.

    Next question.

On the permalinks page in the custom box what do i type.

this page is an artical i wrote. http://baddice.co.uk/?p=460

    Its title is 'redirecting tactica'

so i want the link to be www.baddice.co.uk/redirecting_tactica

I can't see how i can make that happen. Anything i type in that box would make the address be www.baddice.co.uk/whatever i type /redirecting_tactica

    Thanks
    Ben

    Doing that gives me www.baddice.co.uk/index.php/somecrapaboutdate/postname

    I don't want to have the index.php

I've still not been able to do this without having index.php

To use permalinks without index.php your host must support mod_rewrite.

I don't know if goDaddy does, but you'll need to find out.

Some hosts support it but require you to turn it on.

To do this, add the following line to your .htaccess file:

    RewriteEngine on

Also check that the file permissions on your .htaccess allow the server to write to it (so 777).

If you don't have a .htaccess file in the root of your wordpress install, create one - it's just an empty (except rules you add) file named .htaccess

I didn't have a .htaccess file so i created one.

    I added-

    RewriteEngine on

So now that the only thing in that file. Is that right? I've contacted godaddy and am waiting for a response. The permalinks still don't work though.

    Thanks for your help.

Make sure that the .htaccess file has file permissions set to 777 so that Wordpress can write to the file.

Then go and save your permalinks settings again, this should write data to the file (it's size will show as greater if you view it in your FTP client - or you'll see strange looking rules written if you download and take a look).

It will only work if apache mod_rewrite is enabled though.
