The irritating description beside each widget "an advanced widget that gives you total control over . . . " is also untrue.
There is no placement logic - you need to add widget-logic plug in for that.
In the category widget, the categories and child of are not additive. Also, you need id#, and you need another plug in to display the category ids if you are using permalinks, which most people do.
Generally disappointing, sorry.

Why would there be? Should all widget authors now start integrating Widget Logic into their widgets?

Maybe instead of making false statements and complaining, you could've asked for help with this one.
Also, you need id#, and you need another plug in to display the category ids if you are using permalinks, which most people do.
Maybe you should learn more about WordPress instead of complaining. Category IDs are readily available without the use of a plugin.
