Conditional image size in index/post

I am currently using WP embedded image management,adding images in posts.
I’d like to know what is the smartest way to use enable conditional formatting of the “in post” image:
– show a thumbnail when post showed in index.php
– show larger image in single.php, eventually in other position than in index.php
