I've got it working against a non-authenticated external SMTP server, but not against gMail. This may (admittedly) be a firewall problem, but I can successfully telnet smtp.gmail.com 587 and get a reply.

Gmail Apps + this plugin is not working...
Works for me using:
Host: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465
SSL encryption
Username: full e-mail address
Note that Gmail or Google Apps E-mail, when using SMTP, only allows you to use "From" addresses that you have registered under that particular account.
It works! It works! LOL
I think this is the best mail plugin
I have been unable to get any SMTP plug-in to work with gmail. I'm wondering whether it has to do with the host on which I'm running WordPress. From my home machine, I can successfully connect using
telnet smtp.gmail.com 465
When I try the same from my account on the WordPress host (at bluehost.com), it either times out or is refused for ports 25, 465, and 587. But the tech support people don't think it's their problem.
Any ideas? I did make sure, by the way, that the 'from' address I'm using is registered in my gmail account.
Do fixed IP addresses figure into this issue? Or is a firewall thing?
