themattscottI'm having the same issue that was being had here, however I have run the Validator and have not come up with the same issue (Validator Link).
I have switched to several different themes and all of them end up with the sidebar being placed below the main column on only the front page, and any other "pages." The formatting is correct when you are looking at individual posts.
