WP 2.7.1 cannot change avatar in profile

I’m using WP 2.7.1 and in the settings under “Discussion” I have six options for the default avatar: Mystery Man, Blank, Gravatar Logo, Identicon (Generated), Wavatar (Generated), MonsterID (Generated).

I tried to go to my profile (which was setup about a year ago before these options were available) and didn’t see a place to change or add an avatar.

How do I change the existing default and upload a new custom avatar for current users?

The helps I’ve seen so far address WP 2.5 and earlier. Any advice is helpful.

I ran into the same problem on WP version 2.6.3. Here’s what I had to do. I have a Gravatar account. I made the change in Gravatar, cleared my cache, and after about 5 minutes, my avatar updated.

But that is different problem, i fixed but a local Avatar. i think the 5 mins no is so bat, because change, maybe is your hosting, is slow to refresh the petition or maybe s your ISP.

mauleons: I’m not sure I follow you.

If you setup a Gravatar account, you can assign a specific avatar to an email address. Therefore, when you post a comment to a blog, or whatever, the avatar associated with your email address through Gravatar will then display.

Use this plugin. It allows you to change your default avatar with no problems! infact, I registered with this forum because i wanted to share this!

Am I to infer that a third-party service like ‘gravatar’ is the proper way to control my avatar? and (given that ‘user-photo’ is nonmaintained) there is no such thing as a local avatar?

Yes, gravatar.com is the “official” way that WordPress handles avatars, though there are a number of plugins available that add additional functionality.
