Hi,
on my blog, members are allowed to register themselve, however I don't want them to fiddle around with the WordPress backend. Is there a plugin or something similar to integrate user registration and management in the frontend? A howto/tutorial would be helpful as well.

They can't fiddle in your back-end, unless you set the default user role to admin, which I trust you don't. :-)
They might see icons, but if they click on places they're not supposed to visit, they get a polite version of the "get outtahere" message. And if you don't believe me, just register yourself with a new user and look what you can see / do.
If you're still uneasy about the self-registered users even seeing the links - even though those are inoperable to them - you can always install a simple plugin: WP Hide Dashboard. It just does what it says and is WP2.7.1 compatible.

"fiddle" seems to be the wrong word - I want them to have a seamless experience when they register themselve or configure their data, which isn't the case if they have to switch back and forth between back- and frontend. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough, I know that they can't do anything in the backend if I set their role to subscriber.

Seconded, is there a plugin that redirects registered users to the front-end so they can edit their profile there instead of back-end?

Thing is, the user profile editor is part of the WP Admin back-end.
So, either you're looking at coding something together yourself, so as to both redirect and to allow for profile management somewhere else, or a suitable combo of plugins to achieve the same. There are some very nice "re-routing" login / registration plugin solutions out there; speaking of a more integrated approach, there's e.g. a complete bulletin board (a.k.a. forum) plugin solution that offers exactly the functionality you're looking for, namely Simple:Press Forum, which lets you choose where users ("forum members") go to register, edit or view profiles, see user lists, and so on.
My point being, seek and thou shalt find. Plenty of plugins around to pick from.
