Had the same error - Just checked Settings-->Miscellaneous
The "Store uploads in this folder" box should only have wp-content/uploads as the value. It worked for me.

    This will help you

Having troubles uploading? Uncheck "Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders" in Miscellaneous Settings. (You can recheck this option after your logo has uploaded.)

Just to confirm the last two comments in this thread were spot on. One problem I had was simply that the /uploads folder did not exist. The second problem was the "organize my up....." was checked. Fixed permissions and directories and Poofy! It worked.

    Thanks all.
