I used host gator who hosts my site to reinstall from back ups they do every sunday. Cost me 15.00. Moderators and members need to tell everyone to back up more often. It would be a simple solution to a lot of problems and could save moderators and members that are trying to help others a lot of time. That would allow them to go on to other questions and have a better response rate to the forums. NEEDS TO BE STRESSED BY EVERYONE

    Good advice.

Of course no one really listens, unless they first experience the need for a backup. Then they learn...

As an example, when Tools->Upgrade is selected, if there is an update available, users see this message:

Important: before upgrading, please backup your database and files.

But a good number of people just ignored that before they did the 2.7.1 upgrade and then complained they should have been warned that the upgrade would overwrite certain files (e.g. wp-content/themes/default) when they were told to restore their backups--but OOPS, they didn't have a backup.

    Hi Michael,

Being fairly new to Wordpress I naively clicked the 'upgrade' button this morning - but did not get a warning to backup. However, I do have a backups.

My sidebars are all screwed up now so I'm wondering - other than the file you mention above (e.g. wp-content/themes/default)are there any other files I should restore from my backup?

geofflyth - please start another thread with your question, and make sure you state the theme you are using and if possible, provide a link to download that theme.
