If you have the WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin installed, deactivate and delete it then try the Tools->Upgrade again.

It's possible there's a permission issue with your host, and it's not allowing the 'unpacking' so you may have to follow the Upgrading WordPress instructions to upgrade to 2.7.1

I got no messages about anything at all when I tried this and then the browser timed out, however the system now claims I'm running 2.7.1, and I did have to reapply my theme updates manually (I expected this), so it did something. As we all know, a partial update is worse than no update at all. All of the lastmod dates of the component files were changed to the current date. Can I trust the dashboard version number or is there some other way I can verify my install. Thanks.

I suspect you are okay, but you could see if the files listed in http://codex.wordpress.org/Version_2.7.1 are 'new' on your system.

Or change the wp-includes/version.php to $wp_version = '2.7'; and then let it do the upgrade again.

How do you mean "new"? They're there, but looking at actual content, I don't see any sort of comments within giving a 2.7.1 version (or any sort of version number, for that matter).

I've got same response as Hayem:

    Upgrade WordPress

    Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/wordpress-2.7.1.zip

    Unpacking the core update

Regarding your response MichaelH, can this be resolved with CHMOD settings on directories or through SSH to the server that may allow this to be resolved?

My host is 1and1, Linux hosting

    Probably not.

Follow the Upgrading WordPress instructions to upgrade to 2.7.1.

I think it is best to use manual upgrade:

Follow the Upgrading WordPress instructions to upgrade to 2.7.1.

I ran into the same problem too. The dashboard went blank after I hit install, and I let it run for a good five or ten minutes. Then I came here and read that wygnoyes had that happen, stopped it and the site was upgraded to 2.7.1

My blog now says 2.7.1 and everything seems to be working, but I'm a little worried that I didn't get any kind of confirmation that it all went through alright. I really don't want to have to do a manual upgrade, I hate upgrades as it is.

On my blogs where the upgrade was successful, the process took about 20 minutes with no status or success messages. On the other four blogs, I got a fail message

    Could not copy file: /public_html/wp-content/upgrade/core/wordpress/wp-trackback.php

    Installation Failed

    after about 10 minutes

I am having the same problem as Hayem. The installation just hangs. Of course I can do the manual upgrade, but one of the most publicized features of 2.7 was the built-in automatic upgrade. The fact that it doesn't seem to work is VERY disappointing.

Assuming the problem is that the website host doesn't allow "unpacking" is there some setting that we can ask them to change?

Mine just hangs at "unpacking the core update", nothing happens. :(

My upgrade hangs on "Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/wordpress-2.7.1.zip" as well.

Edit: My upgrade worked. I previously assumed that something would happen beneath the above-mentioned status message. After waiting and nothing happening, I clicked the "WordPress 2.7.1 is available! Please update now." link at the top of the page and the upgrade process started. I had assumed this link would take me to the same page I was already on.

Perhaps this process can be clarified for future versions. When something says "Downloading update" and nothing changes, it's natural to assume that you shouldn't click anything, as it would disrupt the download.

I found the problem the problem, at least with 1and1 as my host.

I had to specify that PHP5 was being used via the .htaccess file. I added these two lines:

    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
    AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php

vtroia's solution worked a treat for me upgrading to 2.8.

HOWEVER - afterwards, it's worth commenting out (add a "#" before) the lines. I've noticed some flaws in 2.8 if you don't.

    Details on blog post:

vtroia, thanks, worked like a charm! (I'm on 1and1 and had it hang at "downloading update").

Thanks Wordpress... I realize you are making this tool available for people like me who don't have a clue how to code, etc but why put out an upgrade that crashes everything. I have a pre game stanley cup show to host on http://www.puckdrop.ca/blog and guess what... you didn't need to guess as I am royally you know what. It is pretty sad and hopefully someone can help me. I have been able to get into admin but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

The plugin "WP Security Scan" was causing this for me. Disabling it allowed the upgrade to run without issue.

I was getting this when upgrading to 2.8.3. I successfully worked around it by temporarily deactivating all my plugins.

(I previously tried selectively deactivating but never found the culprit. I think it must have been some combination of plugins that was stopping the upgrade.)

My auto upgrade was hanging at download as well, on a 1and1 host. This worked for me as well - thanks!
