stupid question? wordpress and bluehost (4 posts)

    Hey guys!

So I'm totally new to this get your domain name, webhosting, installing WordPress. I've read tutorials and watched video tutorials, and I feel like I'm either a moron or just don't realize it's that easy.

So, please correct me if I'm wrong here--

If Bluehost is my server/hosting site and I *just* run their installation of WordPress through Fantastico, then I don't need to do the 5-minute quick install and don't need to worry about a secret key and all that?

Because I didn't know any better last night, I FTPed all the files as all the tutorials say to do, but then when I got to the /install.php part, I got the Error Page 404 that came up. It wasn't sticking to my domain name either, it was converting to my wordpress link...which now makes me wonder if the domain mapping is right because it didn't stick. However, if you just go to my domain name, it works. If you go to my wordpress link, it goes to my domain name.

Any thoughts/comments? Thanks for your help!

the 404 is more than likely due to the recent changes bluehost made to their server set up - I experienced this first hand helping someone using them as a host just last week. I say "more than likely" because Im not looking at what you are describing, and you, honestly, dont describe it well.

The answer to your question though, is no, you do NOT need to do the 5 minute install stuff if you install through the fantastico. They achieve the same thing -- a wordpress install.

However, you SHOULD edit the wp-config.php that will be put on your web space as a result of the fantastico install and change the secret keys.

whooami: Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry if what I typed out isn't described well. Let me try again.

Okay, so my domain name is diversevoicesquarterly.com
    but my wordpress is dvquarterly.wordpress.com

I went ahead, last night, I did the five-minute quick install, w/ the ftp client and all that. It asked me if I wanted to overwrite existing files, and I said "OK." It did that, then when I went to
    diversevoicesquarterly.com/wp-admin./install.php

    It converted the url to:
    dvquarterly.wordpress.com/wp-admin/install.php
and that's when I got that Error Page 404.

So that's what made me think that either the installation didn't work or that my domain mapping isn't working.

    Does that make more sense?

    Thanks,
    -K

Domain mapping does not require any install. It sounds like what you have done is set up a redirect rather than domain mapping. If you want domain mapping you can follow the instructions given at wordpress.com on how to have that done: http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/
You can also try for domain masking, there is some more information here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/229083?replies=7
Or you can use the export/import features available through wordpress to move all your content to the new installation, however, if you do this and your theme is not the default or classic theme, you will need to find your theme (or another desired theme) and upload that.
