Specifically, I'm wondering if there's a tag in CVS that I could use to make my blog stick at 1.5 now, or if I'd be best served downloading and overwriting everything with one of the archives?

Just upgrade like normal, it won't take long.

I have 1.5 from one of the nighly versions, just doing the normal instructions should be ok for updating to the Stable version of 1.5? can anyone confirm that?
i had a nightly 1.5 version (2005-02-10 i believe) and was able to upgrade with no problems. i followed the instructions as they are laid out. backed up and then i deleted everything except wp-config.php and the wp-content folder. btw..i did disable plugins and .htaccess, additionally i disabled permalinks.
One strange thing i noticed was that i had a theme created after i logged back in that was named my blog name. i simply ftp'd and deleted it with no issues.
Overall...painless. wordpress can only be called impressive.
I would just cvs update now (and then not do it anymore :))
There aren't any new branches (yet...), so go for it.
Do i upload the new wp-config.php or not?
Never mind, you don't.
Anyways i think i got it updated correctly and yes i also had a new theme with the name of my blog inside the themes folder and under presentation.
