• This doesn’t seem possible in wordpress, but I’m hoping that maybe I’m missing something.

I know categories can have multiple subcategories, but I’d like it if they could also have multiple parent categories. An example of how this would be useful:

You have two parent categories called
    Beautiful Widgets
    Ugly Widgets

Both Beautiful Widgets and Ugly Widgets could have a lot of the same subcategories: expensive widgets, cheap widgets, red widgets, ect…

If someone visiting the widget site wanted to only see cheap widgets, they would only have to visit one category page if multiple parents were possible. If not, they’d have to look at two category pages.

    bump

If they had a shared parent you would get all cheap widgets or red widgets when you clicked either beautiful or ugly. another way to do this would be to have
    Beautiful Widgets
    Ugly Widgets
    and by type
You could then tag them with 2 tags – cheap ugly widgets and cheap widgets, the cheap widgets being a child of by type

You make a good point. I hadn’t thought of that.

Tags don’t work great for my purpose though as I’m setting up a multi-author blog, and I fear there would be entirely too many tags to deal with. I think for my purposes I will have to either make all of my categories top level categories with no subcategories, or use custom fields of some sort.

Ultimately I want to allow my visitors the ability to filter the posts being shown by a number of different categories (or custom fields), so that, for example, only posts that are tagged as being in both category 11 and category 22 are shown.

Would you happen to know of a good way of doing that? I found WP-Smart Sort Premium plugin, which would be absolutely perfect if it worked, but so far, it does not, and support seems nonexistant.
