Can I use WP to build a magazine style / social network site?

A client want’s to build an advanced magazine style site with user membership and interaction And I want to use WP… How can I convince him that WP will do the job?
How strong is WP when it comes to handling registered members, what plugins can I use for that? Can registered user upload content like photos and video?
