I have been having this problem since 2.6.

When I look at my Admin panel it says:
    9 Tags

However, I don’t have any tags. It should read 0 Tags because I have never created or used tags in my blog. When I click the number 9 and go to the tag page, it doesn’t list a single tag. Obviously because there are no tags to list. 😛

How do I get this number to ‘recount’ so that it will go to 0?

  • What happens if you add a tag? Does the number increase to 10 or change to 1.

Then what happens if you delete the tag?

Empty tags show up as tags there too, but don’t show on the tags page itself. Kind of annoying, I think.

Basically, the number shown there reflects how many tags are in your database, even if you have not got them on a post at present. Removing a tag from a post doesn’t delete the tag itself.

This is probably a bug, empty tags really should show up on the tag editing screen.

    Thanks for the replies!

Michael, I just added a tag and the count went up to 10:

If what is happening is what Otto42 says, how can I clear out these empty tags? I tried going to delete in the bulk actions option to see what that would do, but it didn’t clear out the strange 9 tags.

Is there anywhere in the database I can go to reset this number?

Find the entries in the terms table that have “post_tag” as their type. Remove them.

Thank you so, so much, Otto42. It’s nice to see that number at 0.
