Sounds like a file permission error…
What operating system is your server/pc running the blog under.. Windows/Linux?
As far as the admin page that lists all the plug-in being used and if one needs an upgrade, the automatic upgrade works fine. It logs in through it’s FTP settings, upgrades and reactivated the plug-in.
But on the Dashboard, if there is a WordPress upgrade, I’ll get the, “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.” error. The same thing goes when you click the install link in the ‘Most Popular’ Plug-ins section on the Dashboard.
I’ve sett all my directory permissions to 777 to see if it was a file permissions problem, but it gave same error.
@claytonjames all of them links you have there are for older version of WP, and don’t help out any since this is a WP 2.7 feature that’s not working.
Doesn’t anybody from WP Dev team read these threads?
A fix to this feature would be really appreciated.
I have gone through the instructions on the codex for log in troubles, including clean installs of wp-config and wp-login and repairing the database. I have tried to creating a new user with admin privileges but that user doesn’t have sufficient permissions either.
Nothing is working for me either 🙁

I see. Actually, file and folder permissions, as well as file and folder ownership issues, apply no matter what version of WordPress you use. My point was, there is a lot of conversation in the forums concerning the use of automatic upgrade and how it might be responsible for adversely affecting file and folder permissions or ownership, and what others affected by this issue have done about it.
More specifically, I gave those references because of the title of this thread;
“You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page”
That makes it (in my opinion), in all probability, a file/folder ownership permission issue. How could permission or ownership values change if you didn’t change them? Possibly by allowing a plugin or script to access the network and write to your directories.

You have set your directory permissions to check a suspected file permission problem.
My thinking could be off a bit off on this, (it’s Happy Hour here!), but just because you set a directory to 777, doesn’t mean the files inside are 777 unless you set the permissions intentionally recursive, (which would not be wise) or that an ownership issue on a file still won’t give you a problem. But there could be other reasons you are having the issue. Might be something as simple as file corruption or incomplete upgrade.
I may be in error by making the somewhat broad assumption that you all may have used an “automatic upgrade” feature at some point prior to this issue. If so… carry on. Good luck to you.

@ issy-m Did the force but it didn’t work.
I had to actually have my host do something on their end to resolve one problem.
They had to make changes to their PHP server and now the plugin update on the full plugin menu works.
However, on the Dashboard the Featured Plugin section still doesn’t work when clicking on the ‘install’ link.
I have seen some featured plugins there and wanted to install them using the ‘install’ link. The gray window opens and shows the ‘You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page’ line instead of the actual plugin information page.
I have just finished removing ALL of the wordpress files on my site and uploaded all of them again with the latest download package, and it didn’t fix the problem.
File permissions are set properly on both Directories and files.
I don’t know what else to do from this point.

I have two wordpress blogs on same hosting company, one worked no problem, the second one is giving me this error.
Please, please, please, please, perleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez can wordpress please remove that dumb ‘cheatin’ huh?’ after getting the insoluble “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page” error? Pleasee replace it with something helpful. It’s dumb, juvenile, meaningless and thoroughly unhelpful.
Some of us actually want our wordpress to work after it’s transferred to a new host, not some primary school snigger.
