Actually, I have used those steps everytime that I have upgraded my blog and have had no problems :/

And, just to be snobbishly pedantic, going from version 1.2.2 to version 1.5 is, in my books, not an upgrade since 1.5 is not an official release.

It may not be an official release, but technically, yes it is an upgrade:

If you dont think going from 1.2.2 to 1.5 is an upgrade, then why such the big dont saying not to do those steps to go to 1.2.2 to 1.5 with the words "upgrade" right there on the page ;)
Codex is not one of NuclearMoose's books. Rather, it "belongs" to and is collated by many.
Also, just as 1.5 is not complete, neither is Codex.
If you're going to be exacting enough to throw around dictionary definitions, I think you should be logically rigorous as well :)

actually BuffyVS, my question to you would be: what WP versions did your upgrade/not-upgrade entail. was it 1.2.2 to 1.5, or did you go from 1.3beta or whatever to 1.5gamma.
because i, just in time, saw those BIG LETTERS in codex and froze in my tracks as i was about to upgrade/not-upgrade from 1.2.2 to 1.5.
and i so want to, i almost cant wait.
i am currently looking all over the place for the "secret" upgrade instructiuons that will work for the upgrade that Podz has hinted at here in the forums. any hints? anyone???
or my next question: whats the current status, when will 1.5 go stable...
because after checking out 1.5 in a shiny test-install, damn i almost can't wait.
Podz' "secret upgrade instructions" are not here. They are being written.
The main reason that the instructions on the codex page will not work as expected when "upgrading" to 1.5 from 1.2.2 (or any version previous to that) is because the templates that worked in 1.2 are rarely directly transferrable to 1.5 without edits. So, following the instructions on that codex page will destroy your 1.2 template, even though the rest of the instructions are applicable to a 1.5 "upgrade".
If you're just using an unmodified default WP 1.2 template though, no worries at all - after 1.5 is installed, just change your theme to "Classic" and all will be well :)
NOTE: I haven't personally tried the upgrade instructions to get from 1.2 to 1.5, so I cannot say for sure that it will work. In theory, it should (except for the templates, as noted above). But hey, that's why you backed up your database before you started, right? ;)

If you do not care at all about your current layout (and I do mean at all), then go for it, and start over.
If though, you quite like your layout, then that guide to which you refer will break it.
I wrote the new guide, and the post here, and on Codex because as 1.5 gets closer, more people here may be tempted to upgrade, and what I and the other forum supporters do not need is dozens of people posting saying "1.5 broke my blog".
It won't break your blog if you do it right, or, do as many people have here - install a testblog and play there until release.

So far, no. Although it's still a *very* good idea to backup your database before doing a nightly-to-nightly "upgrade" ;) After the backup, just upload the files that have changed (or all of them - except /wp-config.php of course and maybe the /wp-content/themes/ folder if you've customized either of the default themes) and run /wp-admin/upgrade.php to make sure :) After some nightlies (at least one so far, possibly more) you also need to logout and log back in to update the cookies that are used by the blog.
