   Hi there,

   So I've got my WordPress installed, all working perfectly.

   I was so excited to get into it, until I actually got into it.

   I've got a good idea of what I want to do, I'd made some PSD's of how I wanted it to look, and fired up the Codex with the intention of starting from the top (literally... the header) and working my way through it.

   Minutes later I'm completely stuck.

   Could anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial on creating a WP layout, or maybe make some pointers on getting started.

   I'm fluent in HTML / CSS and I thought I understood the basic workings of PHP but obviously not enough to understand WordPress. I mean I can recognize how it's calling files to use for the header/footer/comments etc etc but putting it all together is proving very tricky.

   Help please!

   Have you read through the Theme Development section of the Codex? Also, Small Potato has an excellent tutorial on building a theme from scratch here. Additionally, Weblog Tools Collection has a video tutorial section covering all aspects of WordPress here.

   Thanks for the replies both.

   I had in fact been working through the Codex area you mention Whooami but I think a step by step like the one LenK mentioned will help me better.

   The Codex is fantastic don't get me wrong, but I am completely new to theme development and the tutorial on Small Potato seems a good place to start.

   This is absolutely THE BEST tutorial around on WP Theming. Just because it's over two years old, don't let it fool you. It simplifies things and gives little tips and tricks along the way. Shelly is a friend of mine and a darn talented web designer.
