I think the built-in editor should be removed completely. It just encourages people to edit core files, which is not good.
On the other hand, if you need to edit core files for testing etc., there are many more appropriate and more convenient ways.
A big help would be line numbering. I use the code editor in CPanel, and that includes line numbering.
