Hello

To podcast easly you need WP 1.5

Just write your post

near the bottom half of the admin page you will see a form to add an enclosure
Look here :
http://regardnumerique.free.fr/imgblog/forum.jpg

In the form write
- the ful MP3 url
- the number of bits of the file
- audio/mpeg

You're done

Yeah, well I've upgraded to the latest build and I don't have that option. Is it something I have to turn on somewhere? I don't get it.

lofistl: Make sure you're in advanced mode when writing/editing a post.

I'm a bit confused,

I just upgraded to the latest 1.5 build, and in the custom fields of the advanced write page I only have two input boxes (no pull down w/enclosure, lik in the example above"

I only have a box for 'key' and 'value'

How do I use this to include an enclosure for podcasting.

I may have figured it out but typing - enclosure - in the key box, and adding the link to the mp3 file in the value box then clicked the submit button.

I now have a pulldown available in custom fields, but after publishing the post, where does the enclosure go, where is the link to the rss.

I am totaly lost here can you tell?

This option is not available like your jpg shows. I upgraded from 1.2

I have the same thing as the other person stated, no option except the ability to provide "custom fields" and I am in advanced mode.

I am sad to see that WP1.5 does not support podcasting or enclosures easily.... or have any info to help us figure out what to do.

I guess I have to add back the hack I had in 1.2.

You have to enter enclosure into the key field, and then the information into the value box. Just because it's not there by default does not mean it cannot be done.

Im not sure its working, but I followed the suggestion from this link:

He says to paste the url link to your mp3 file into the blog post and the software finds it and recognizes it. Now looking at my blog, you just see the url line (see my bog here http://ayurvedahc.com/shakti/?cat=1).
It looks like it isnt working because its not highlighted(?), yet when I go the the advanced mode on the admin page (as discussed above in this post) I see the information entered into the 'key' and 'value' boxes. So something is happening automatically...but is it working.
I ran the html path to the rss2.php http://ayurvedahc.com/shakti/wp-rss2.php and tried to add it to live bookmarks in Firefox, but I get an error - "Live Bookmark feed failed to load."

Also I ran the feed debugger at ipodder.org and error says: "The file does not contain valid XML"

Would someone please advise how to proceed from here? I am not a programmer. Thanking you.

update from last post: got it to work
just had to embed the player for the final step.

Well folks...

I have 1.5 (new clean install) working as it is supposed to.
I used the "link" process described above and WP automatically sets up the enclosure tag with all the info correctly so I assume that I am "podcasting!"

I am using iPodder to try to test my feed and am not successfull. iPodder log tells me:

"Checking www.podcastparadise.com/wp-rss2.php?category_name=podcasts
... couldn't fetch or parse; exception class 'SAXParseException' "

My link in the blog is correct because when I click on it in my browser, I can open the mp3

Like I said before, WP seems to do the "enclosure" thing correctly like others in this thread mentioned...

I put the following string in the "add feed manually field in iPodder: www.podcastparadise.com/wp-rss2.php?category_name=podcasts

This is where I think I have the problem. None of the other items subscribed to look anything like this.

Can anyone clue me in? I have tried for a few hours to figure this out to no avail...

alrighty...here is my question...

I've posted in my blog and at the bottom of the post I added a link to a test mp3. Then I proceeded to go to the advanced portion and add enclosure then the link to the mp3 (again?) as well as the file size and media type.

I also, on my sidebar, posted a link to my rss2.php feed that is dedicated to my podcast category.

NOW WHAT?!

The feed works. but it just shows my post with the link at the bottom. What I don't get is...what is supposed to happen?

Also, to confuse myself even more, is it possible to add a podcast to a differetn section? NOT a post? I'd like to keep my blog and my podcasts separate and not sure if 1.5 supports that. please help, you can email me through my site otherwise i'll wait patiently and confused by my keyboard :)

Thanks for the pointer MacManX. That is the resource I used to get into my current state :>

One interesting note: I didn't take the step of "Then I proceeded to go to the advanced portion and add enclosure then the link to the mp3 (again?) as well as the file size and media type." as joeytrimmer did but it showed up there anyway by itself as buddha has reported.

When this is all settled, someone (me?) needs to adjust some of the details in the codex article on Podcasting that MacManX referred to. There are a couple of confusing statements, at least confusing to me. BTW the codex is a GREAT resource.

I don't see how this page answers the questions of the specific error I'm receiving in iPodder - it looks like it can't get the podcast or parse it correctly for some reason... Or, why I have to put my full URL in the "Subscribe to manually" area instead of some title of the podcast as it appears others have done.

I don't understand the instruction in the codex article that says that there is one other thing that I have to do and that is:

"You need to make your RSS2 feed available - put a link to wp-rss2.php somewhere on your page: http://example.com/wordpress/wp-rss2.php"

I have done this as you can see on my blog home page at:
http://www.podcastparadise.com/wp-rss2.php

As you can see the wp-rss2.php file is in the root dir of the website. This works, I think, as it brings me to the page with that looks like it is the rss feed page. It shows "all" the blog entrys.

Notice that the words "Link to the File" in my test entry are not an active link but if you go to the home page, they are. Also note that if you look in the "Archive " section, the same blog entry has no active link attached to those words. I would think that this is a problem and may provide a clue to why things are not working.

Notice I did say "MAY" provide a clue. In the ignorance I may just be embarrassing mmyself by making such an observation.

Any way, things are still not completely working and I'm not completely Podcasting as others are. I must be missing some critical step somewhere...

Thanks, again, for your help. Once I get this fixed I promise I'll contribute a complete step-by-step in the codex.

In order to get your podcast published, do the following:

When in the Advanced posting mode, go to the bottom section, labeled "Add a new custom field to this post".

Where it says, "Key", type "enclosure".
Where it says, "Value", enter the URL of the MP3 you wish to podcast.

Publish your post and try refreshing your iPodcasting tracker. The podcast should show up!

what is this ipodcasting tracker...see that's the confusing thing. I thought wordpress had podcasting support...meaning you don't need anything extra...

if you go to my page...you'll see on the top post (at the bottom of the post) the link to my mp3. OK. then on the sidebar you see at the bottom a link to my rss2 podcast feed.

is that it? it seems i'm missing something.

also, I still would like to know if you could have your podcasts as a separate entity from posts. So that I can blog normally and if i choose to do a pod cast, say in my sidebar, it's separate. ya know?

thanks guys..one day i'll get this thing. blah!

The ipodcasting tracker is something like ipodder - used to subscribe to podcasts. BTW I just managed to get your podcast ok. Via ipodder and straight into itunes. Don't think your are missing anything :)

Just make sure that the category of the podcasts is different than anything else, like 'podcasts'. Then select that category when you create a podcast post. The feed URL would be www.yoursite.tld/wp-rss2.php?category_name=podcasts

yeah i know what you mean dave, but to clarify i mean, if i could get podcasts separated from blog posts so that they don't appear as my blog posts do . But rather I could call them up on a separate page or sidebar.

I'm workin on it but at the moment it's tedious. It's nice to have built in support but i'm having trouble modifying it for my needs. thanks guys, hope i'm not hijacking the thread too much. :)

Hello guys,

I publish for two months now a podcast using WP 1.5 and its works perfectly

WP is even able to detect automagically enclosures in the post text and ad alone the enclosure field without requiering any manual setting .

If it doesn't, just ad it manually

When it comes to the problems with iPodder, control that your RSS feed is valid (I don't have the url handy but they are RSS validators around), iPodder is VERY sensible to little errors other software doesn't bother.

Hi,

Like lstelie, I'm podcasting quite automatically by just adding the link to the mp3 file in the post. My podcast: http://absm-log.info/mp3blog.php
But sometimes, for specific url like mp3 at http://archive.org the enclosure isn't detected in the feed.
I just don't undertsand why it works for quite all url except those at archive.org (exemple of link: http://www.archive.org/download/pls006/pls006-02-Symphonic_Stereo-Get_Away.mp3 ).

Adding an "enclosure" custom field solve the problem but don't tell me why it isn't detected automatically.

Hi all,

I've done some testing and this is what I've discovered.
1. It does seem to be the case that when a link points to something on archive.org WP won't include it in the rss feed as an enclosure unless the enclosure is expressly added.
2. When I do add an explicit enclosure with a URI to a file on archive.org it does add the enclosure but only the URL portion of the enclosure. It does not seem to grab the specific file size or type.
With the advent of ourmedia.org I'm gonna guess that we are going to see a lot more data hosted on archive.org (ourmedia partner).

While I'm at it, here's the format and behavior I'd like to see.
- use the rel= attribute in the <a> tag for enclosures. It would look something like <a href="example.org/sample.mp3" rel="enclosure">sample.mp3</a>.
- WP could then look for tags marked specifically as enclosures.
- WP checks the filetype and size per the URL provide and spits out a proper enclosure tag.
This is the format that they use at feedburner. Oh, and though I've not seen anyone do it, by my reading of the rss2.0 specs it should be possible to include multiple enclosures in a single rss item. That would be cool as well.

I'm going to amend part of my previous post. When linking to files hosted on archive.org I actually see two different behaviors.

Explicit enclosure keys of the form:

http://www.archive.org/download/csr049/csr049_wcwc_01-nick-chapman_take-me-now.mp3

do not get their information updated with file size and type. However enclosure keys of the form:

http://audio32.archive.org/3/audio/csr049/csr049_wcwc_01-nick-chapman_take-me-now.mp3

do get updated with file size and type.

Here's my guess, the first URL is what the folks at archive.org tell folks to use. The second URL is what you are redirected to but I'm also going to guess that the folks at archive.org reserve the right to change things behind the scenes so that the second URL isn't likely to work consistently over time. I'm going to guess that WP doesn't know what to do with that redirect and so can't look up the data for the file.

Oh, neither form, when added to the post as a normal link, gets automagically transformed into an enclosure.

And just for giggles I tried adding two enclosure keys and that does work.

1. Does this need to be a literal page named "we-rss2.php"?
In my post I entered:
"Podcast feed:
http://ayurvedahc.com/RadioAyS/Sanjoy/sadhana.xml"

it doesnâ€™t do anything (i.e. there is no link added).
see the line looks just like the rest of the text: http://ayurvedahc.com/shakti/?p=2

In my trackback I added both rss feed page (in my case I use .xml as it was easily validated) and mp3 pages.
1. Are both necessary,
2. Is this address the same issue described in codex; or does it only relate to ping?

(otherwise all seems successful; ipodder finds my xml page and loads it into itunes.)

I've tried to set up a podcast on my site as well (http://www.biglittleg.com/blog). Looking at the rss feed, it seems to have the right enclosure tags, length and file type. I'm not sure why it won't show up as a podcast feed, though. The site as a whole appears in regular rss feed, but the podcast doesn't seem to get picked up by ipodder.org. When I attempt to validate the xml, I'm getting all sorts of errors, so this may be the root of the problem. I'm using a custom template, which I've modified slightly.

Any hints much appreciated.

I've had no problems getting the feeds to be recognized in general (though I'm using a feedburner feed so that I can take advantage of their stats). My issue is with the enclosures.

When I create my post I put my enclosure tag with all the appropriate components into the post. Unfortunately, then WP adds two more enclosures that I can't delete. The problem is that when I look at my listing at PodcastAlley.com it shows the file size as HUGE and it shows three links in a row. The other issue is that the posts don't get seen at iPodder.org or other places as being in the most recent podcasts - they just aren't seen correctly.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!
