is there a way to retain the post links, etc. in the excerpt-like mode? i don't want to show the entire post but it would be great to keep the live links which are in the main post.

that's the plug! btw - there is a mod that corrects problems with original - see link below. tested up to and including v2.6
the only limitations to controlling html tags are me at the moment. but i did get my links out of the box. haven't tried it yet in the advanced excerpt option in post admin, but will shortly.
