I’m helping a lady (Jane) who owns a domain name and wanted a blog installed on it.

She hired someone a few months ago (Laura) but she never completed the work even though she was paid.

Laura had asked Jane for her domain registration info so she could transfer the DNS to her own server for the purpose of creating a WordPress theme on Jane’s domain. However, after it was transferred, she stopped responding to emails and now Jane says “Laura disappeared.”

Jane purchased a hosting package yesterday and I transferred the DNS to her new host. According to Godaddy, the process is complete, but I can’t access the old WP information to switch it to the new host.

WordPress 2.6.2 was installed at her domain but on the disappearing Laura’s server. No content was added so there aren’t any files to keep. I just want to have it so I can have a new WP installation on Jane’s new server for her existing domain so I can customize a theme for her.

Jane has tried contacting Laura through her email, Twitter, etc. but she’s not responding.

I’m not sure how to explain it better. I hope that’s enough info. I could really use some help with this. I can’t install and customize a theme until I find a solution. I hope there is some way to deal with this.

  • I guess you are trying to access the old account in Laura’s server? See if Jane has the old account IP information and access the account from there to create a backup.

If no IP information found, see if Laura has any domain => use Laura’s domain and Jane’s old account username/pass to login to the control panel and see if it works.

I don’t really need access to the old WordPress installation. I just want the new one to override the old one. All that exists right now is the Hello World post. I don’t mind starting completely from scratch since there’s basically nothing there. And it was always on Jane’s domain, but just using Laura’s server. What a gongshow!

I can login to the wp-admin since I have the admin and password. But I don’t have access to the wp-config file and I can’t change permissions since it’s not Jane’s server.

I was reading somewhere that to change from one host to another you need to access the wp-config file and change it to point to the new installation, but I can’t since I don’t have access to the old server.

Any way I can just force the new host’s installation to show up instead? I mistakenly assumed that transferring the DNS would fix that. Total n00b at this part of it.

I guess the DNS transfer wasn’t complete. Everything works fine now. I’ll check this one off my daily idiot moves list.
