• I have a new website hosted by Bluehost. I want to have as many as 100 WP bloggers eventually living under the website. Right now we are probably looking at less than 20. I have another person prepared to be a moderator. Bluehost will allow me to install up to 100 WP databases.

I would like myself, as admin, and my moderator to be able to monitor the blogs, go in a delete comments, change themes, modify or delete posts etc. Anything that will keep “bad stuff” off the website and anything that can help users. And the ultimate is to delete the blog totally for serious offenses.

I thought the multiple roles and capabilities was going to be the best solution to this and that is why I chose WP (and thus Bluehost). I have played around with several test installations, assigning different roles etc. What I have found is that the admin and the editor roles will be perfect for me and my moderator. The only difficulty is with installation of themes. I actually have to log into my control panel at bluehost to install themes to the directory. I will not allow the moderator to also be able to log into the cp.

What is not going to work is the author role for my users. They are not able to moderate their own comments! I fussed with this over and over, logging into an author blog account as admin, editor and author. The admin and editor could delete single comments. When I logged in as the author I found that the comment box came up in a way that “looked” like the author could delete multiple comments as a bulk delete, but not individual comments. However, I was never successful in deleting any comments in the author role.

I would give the users the editor role but I don’t like that they are able to delete users on their account. Are they able to delete the admin user or just users at the editor and lower levels?

If anyone has worked with multiple users I would appreciate your advice. I am now able (as of yesterday) to install the 2.7 ver on Bluehost (have been working with 2.6). I am wondering if there is any change in the roles and capabilities in this ver that might resolve my problems? I do not have the ability to install WPmu.
    Thank you.

  • I haven’t had the chance to do more than play around a little bit with user roles in wp 2.7, but it seems they are the same as in 2.6. There may be some way to tweak them, perhaps with a plugin, but I don’t know how secure it would be. As for your moderator, if you create an FTP account which directly accesses the themes directory, your moderator should be able to use that to upload themes without needing access to your cp.
