• All this stuff is overwhelming and it’s all greek to me, but I want to blog. I would like some suggestions on themes that have expandable capabilities, but is easy to learn and use and has a clean simple appearance. I like the look of Rick Schfren’s Strategic Profits, but would like some other suggestions. I saw a Yaro Starak video that showed a show all button on the WordPress themes page, but I can’t find it. It has a search box, but I don’t know how one is supposed to search for themes you don’t know the names of? How important is what version I pick. Can anyone HELP? Thx.

  • There are a number of places to find WordPress themes. A good place too start would be at the WordPress Theme Directory. You can search by what type of theme you are looking for, such as fixed width, liquid, 2 column and so on.

Here are some places to purchase “Premium Themes”:
    WooThemes
    Template Monster

Plus if you are really wanting to personalize your blog you can hire a good freelancer to create a custom template.

    Matt Brett
    Jayme
    Me!

Oh and all of the information you find here on WordPress.org can be VERY helpful. Here’s a good guide to read through if you are new to WordPress:

    Does this information help?

I’m so green I’m not even sure if this will get to you, but thx for responding, nex2nun. I’ve been beating my head against the wall for a week and this is my first check back since the day I asked for help. I’ve read and re read where to start and followed link after link reading all I can and the more I read the less I know and understand. Everywhere I read how easy WP is to use. Not so, no way! I ned pro help, but I need to find someone geographically close so I can sit with them and watch or I’ll just be shoveling out money and still won’t understand anything and that won’t help one damn bit. I don’t want to by a fish I want to learn how. If you know a pro in the east valley area of Phx, Az I’d love to find them. Thanks for tryin to help

If you can’t figure out something as simple as selecting a theme from the hundreds available … you should probably forget running a blog with WP. Sorry to be harsh, but reality demands straight talk sometimes.

but I don’t know how one is supposed to search for themes you don’t know the names of? How important is what version I pick. Can anyone HELP? Thx.

Really now … on the theme page in the left column – you can search for themes by color, styles, columns, etc. Select one that meets your needs and search through those that fit. Want a 2 column theme? Select “2 column” themes on the left. Could it possibly be easier?

Learning WP is not that hard, but you need at least SOME experience with HTML and CSS, if not PHP – which generates the pages based on the markup as styles by the CSS. This is pretty basic stuff. I would suggest you get some background in this BEFORE trying to use WP and spend some time on a place like the SitePoint Forums that have sections on CSS, HTML, and PHP in addition to other languages.

Are you sure you want to be a webmaster? Choosing a theme after all is the simplest task. WordPress is easy to use, but it will still require some amount of understanding. You will have to ftp files, backup files, modify files, probably make theme changes, deal with web hosting issues, etc. and all this will be more difficult than choosing a theme.

theme is still an important bit =P if the site looks bad, how well you know ftp isnt gonna matter
