    Code doesn’t have to be semantically-correct for CSS to work.

    You are, of course, correct. However, it sure makes your job much easier when trying to ensure cross-platform and cross-browser compatibility.
    Painting a car red doesn’t make a car work, but a correctly constructed car is much nicer to have in the long run.
