2.7 beta Upgrade Issue? (24 posts)

I posted earlier about a problem with the maintenance page staying up, but I just tried upgrading again because my wordpress says "An automated WordPress update has failed to complete - please attempt to update again now."

I tried to update again and it keeps stopping at the same part. This is what my wordpress says:

    "Upgrade WordPress

    Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/nightly-builds/wordpress-latest.zip

    Unpacking the core update

    Verifying the unpacked files

    Installing the latest version"

It always stops at Installing the latest version. Any clue what could be going on? Is it just this nightly build that messes up? Should I just wait for a couple of weeks until a new comes out?

If it's this blog, http://www.longbeachsales.com/Blog/ it looks updated.

Did you do something to get it to complete?

    Michael,

It is update. I tried updating on a different computer and it worked. Maybe it was my connection?

And yes, that is our blog.

    I have the same problem.

I just installed 2.7 RC1 on one of my blogs and attempted the auto update for a nightly build.

    I got the message:

    'Wordpress upgraged successfully'

after all the other upgrading messages. But despite the apparent success, I still get this error message in yellow across the top of every dashboard page"

'An automated WordPress update has failed to complete - please attempt the update again now'

I've attempted it seeral times now and keep getting the same result.

I'm self-hosted on an XP PC running apache/PHP etc. I've been running several WordPress blogs on this for years. The dashboard shows I'm running RC1-10041. I don't know what build it was before I tried the upgrade.

    My site is: www.daleisphere.com

Despite this, my site seems to be running just fine. Any way to get rid of the annoying yellow message if all is well?

You probably have a .maintenance file in the WordPress root/base folder so delete that.

Thanks Michael. I did have a .maintenance file there. Removing it solved the problem.

I just upgraded my root blog at www.daledietrich.com and the exact same thing happened. There was a .maintenance file there too. Removing it similarly solved the problem.

I have two more blogs to go.

Any idea where these files come from. Did I do something wrong? Is this a hangover somehow from my prior 2.5 installations.

    Thanks so much.

The .maintenance file is put there by the auto upgrade (either core or plugins) but typically gets removed upon successful completion of the process.

I had that happen once this morning on a test blog running on a local XAMPP install but couldn't duplicate the problem.

OK, this seems like some kind of a bug in the current RC1 that I should report somewhere. I'll see if I can figure out where to report it.

    Thanks Michael.

Every time I try to update the core, things seem to be working, and then the upgrade stops after "Unpacking the core update."

Yes, I know three people will just tell me to update manually. But that hardly seems like a valid fix for this issue.

I'm a new user of 2.7 RC1. I attempted to use the "Tools--> Upgrade--> Upgrade Automatically" for the first time to grab RC2, but the process just hangs at "Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/nightly-builds/wordpress-latest.zip". I only see a zero-filesize "wordpress-latest.zip" sitting in my wp-content directory.

However, a manual download produces a normal size "wordpress-latest" zip file.

Any thoughts why automatic upgrade is producing a zero-size zip file?

I see strange problem, I do Upgrade Automatically, and:
    I see info:
    Can't copy file: ....../wp-content/upgrade/core/wordpress/wp-trackback.php

    but
I repeat upgrade : error the same
so I repeat upgrade : error the same
I repeat upgrade and everything is OK,

    I changed nothing between upgrade.

I've also got problems upgrading WP 2.7, be it WP itself or plugins. I've tested multiple versions of WP 2.7 and always get this error message:

    Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/nightly-builds/wordpress-latest.zip

    Unpacking the core update

    Could not create directory: /public_html/public_html

    Installation Failed

Why create a public_html folder within my public_html folder? I might add that upgrading plugins worked like a charm before 2.7.

I am having this exact same problem. both with 1 site running 2.7 beta 3, and 2 sites running 2.7rc1.

Anyone else run into this and figured out how to solve it? No .maintenance file is created... so kind of puzzled.

I'm also using 2.7 rc1 and the update hangs after download - the update screen stops on "unpacking the core update". It's successfully downloaded the wordpress-latest.zip file (I can see it in my wp-content folder).

I'm on 1and1 servers, LAMP, mysql 5, permissions set to 755 for all folders and subfolders and files within my site's directory.

I know how to upgrade manually - I've been doing it for years - but I'd love to get this auto-updating feature working. Ideas? thanks!

    @mmcginnis - same specs here.

It might be something with 1and1 then... however the plugin download/install works just fine, so I am really not sure what.

The 0 download size for the zip is strange... it tells me the transfer is initiated, but no data is ever received.

    Anyone else have ideas?

I've just upgraded five blogs from RC1 and RC2 to 2.7 (happy happy). The upgrades seem to be successful...although it looks like they don't finish.

I hit the Install Automatically, enter the password, select secure server option, hit upgrade, and the body of the screen goes blank, the progress bar hits halfway...and that's where it stays.

I wait a adequate amount of time, click the Dashboard, and it tells me I am running the version I upgraded to.

I don't have the problem with plugin upgrade or installation.

    Are these related?

@illustrata My upgrades definitely aren't finishing, no matter how long I wait. All that happens is I get a "Unpacking the core update" message, and then nothing happens. When I check my wp-content folder, there is a zip file (of the expected size) containing the update in there, but it never gets unpacked.

I also have a problem with automatic update. I install a new 2.7rc1 an then do an automatic update. All goes ok, but after that my blog is not usable:

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. ...

Then I delete all the blog and the database and reinstall. After that I try an automatic update to 2.7 and have the same error. What is happen? and how I can repair without reinstall?

I have php4 and I read in another post that 2.7 autoupgrade to work must be on php5. If this is right there must be an automatic check before autoupgrade...

@damjang If true, then bingo. My host is lame, and refuses to update its version of PHP. Is this truly the issue?

Oh, today I find that my host has updated the php to 5.2.8 two days ago... So I think that this is the fault: instaled in php4 and updated in 5: do a test and reinstall a fresh rc2 and update to final. But have the same error...

Hey, I'm getting the same error when upgrading from 2.8.3 to 2.8.4.

The upgrade process stops dead in it's track at "installing the latest version". Everytime I try it stops there.

Afterwords, all the screens have the yellow message: "An automated WordPress update has failed to complete - please attempt to update again now.".

However, in the homepage of the dashboard and at the bottom it says I'm running version 2.8.4

I found the .maintenance file and deleted it, and the message dissappeared... But, am I truly running 2.8.4? Did the installation complete 100%?
