I just bought a hosting plan yesterday and want to install wordpress. One click installation is available in my cPanel through Fantastico but the available version is 2.6.3. But now i see the latest version is 2.6.5.Whats the point of installing 2.6.3 when there is a newer version available? And what am I supposed to do now?

And also, whats the difference between uploading wordpress file to the root folder(home) and by creating a directory (wordpress/blog) if i want to install wordpress manually using ftp client. Will it change my site structure? like if i hv site symbiansmartphone.com(main) will it become symbiansmartphone.com/wordpress(as my home page)?

*Sorry if its a silly question but i m new in webhosting/wordpress.*

  • 2.6.5 has some security fixes in it, but I wouldn’t worry about it too much. If you are new, using the one click install will be a little less hassle. 2.6.5 just came out, so that is why your host doesn’t have it yet. If you have a large webhost, they should have the latest version soon. 2.7 will also be out very soon, so don’t get to used to 2.6 🙂

If you are just going to have your blog, you can leave it in the root, and that is what people will see when they visit http://www.yoursite.com, but if you have some HTML pages, and you want one of those as your homepage, then you would need to put WordPress in a folder and it would be available at http://www.yoursite.com/folder
