Rotating header image

I have loaded a php rotating header image into my site which worked fine. However, when I went to navigate to another page there was a gap in the header while a new image loaded? Is there another way to do this where there is no gap between image loads or the header does not have to reload? Even if I use a flash movie, it reloads every time. Perhaps there is a javascript solution. Thanks!!!
