Why is it that if I post something in a child category it automatically appears in the parent category as well? I'd rather that not happen.

It is not in the parent cat but when listing the posts of the parent cat, they get listed, that's true.
Why...? Who knows.
Anyway, I use this plugin to prevent this behaviour:
